Why would my projector refuse to start with a seemingly intact light bulb?
I have an Optoma HD20 projector and since yesterday, after some period of inactivity, it simply refused to start. Here is what happens -- (1) upon pressing power, the power LED turns green and blinks. (2) I can hear the usual motor noise for about 10 seconds, followed by he fan kicking for about the same time. (3) same as (2) and the green light keeps blinking. (4) the motor noise is followed by the power LED turning orange and light LED turning red. (5) the fan kicks in one last time. For completeness, this projector has been used in total for less than 300 hours. I looked at the lamp and it looks absolutely fine -- or let's say it doesn't show the expected features of a dead lamp. Sometime ago, someone on Fixya suggested to repeat a sequence "unplugging, plugging, wait for 20 seconds, power" until the projector light finally shines. I tried it without any success. Has anyone encountered the same problem and was able to fix it?
The ballast unit has most likely failed. Replace the ballast unit, unless the lamp exploded and in which case, there may be glass fragments stopping a fan from turning.

I read the above and it ended up just being my HDMI cable contact being a little lose from me moving the unit around all the time. Just pushed it in and we're back in action!
I put this here because when I was experiencing the same issue I found there was very little info online for this topic. Optoma asked me $125 just to take a look at my out of warranty hd20 projector after I started getting the dreaded "fan failure" error message, I got this error mesage after replacing the bulb (its important to note that the bulb did explode in the unit so some of the debris may have lodged in the fan.) Optoma also kept saying stuff like motherboard issues and fan sensors on the phone. Everything I've read has said the repair price is so high on these issues that it is better to upgrade to a new projector so I resigned myself to doing that very thing. Then I ran up on this video and thought what the heck. So I took the plunge and popped the case off and sure enough the same little fan was stuck and covered with dust. I gently moved it with a screw driver and blew all the dust out of it. Plugged it back in and I'm experiencing glorious 135" hd once again.
My HD20 also broke after about 1000 hours. Their estimate is $703.00 to replace main board and lamp module. Image shuts off automatically after 3 mins of starting. Lamp fail led goes solid red.
Hi miracles4all:
I solved HDMI signal issue in my Optoma HD20. In my case it was the lack of contact between the HDMI cable plug male ending and the Optoma HD20 HDMI female port. My 35ft cable plug male HDMI ending was not completely "seating" in the Optoma HD20 HDMI female port. I solved the problem by purchasing a HDMI female to female coupler and adding a 3ft HDMI cable that had a slim male ending. This 3ft HDMI extension cable made better contact to the Optoma HDMI port and the projector was immediately able to detect HDMI signal. Hope this helps you... kaufmanekpr
