I don't understand your question but will give it a go.
You usually have more than 1 sata connection on the board. If only one is working or you only do have one connection. You can get a pci card that gives you extra sata ports ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/261083138351?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108)
When setting master and slave this is done through the bios. An easier solution for copying from hard drive to hard drive ( much quicker) http://www.pcworld.com/article/2036718/why-its-a-good-idea-to-own-a-usb-to-sata-adapter.html

Essential you have one license allowed and it checks the primary HD via its 'utilities function', and only does a general scan of slave. Since you did not mention Norton version nor your OS general assist here. You might consider going into Options and having it scan both HDs, worked for me.

Martin,

They make SATA cables with a 90 degree connection on one end.
Hopefully this will solve your clearance problems with your case.

Here is a link to website that carries these.

They work great and fit tight against the drive.

Hope this helps,

As marcor494 suggests, that's your best choice. But, what do you want to use the SATA HDD for?. If you are planning on having it as a primary partition HD then go with a pci sata controller, otherwise if it is intended as an extended partition i would suggest an external enclosure with usb/sata/firewire connectors (just in case you ever upgrade your desktop). Good luck.

Set bios for 2hdd

You don't need to set master and slave in the bios.
On IDE hard drives you make sure the jumpers on the hard drive are set to master and slave. It usually tells you which connectors the jumper needs to be on, on the drive where the data cable and power lead plug in. You don't need to do it on SATA drives.

WD1001fals as slave

SATA Hard Disk as a Slave b> An SATA hard drive is an internal hard drive that connects to your computer's motherboard. It is even possible to connect multiple drives to the same computer; however, only one drive can be the master hard drive; the other(s) must be slave drives. This is because the master drive has the operating system installed and must be used to boot up the system. When installing a new SATA hard drive onto your computer, you must set it as a slave.

Power down your computer and disconnect the cables. Remove the Phillips screws from the exterior of the computer case and slide the case open to expose the interior of your computer. Identify the hard drive at the front of your computer, then slide the new SATA drive in underneath. Insert the smaller power cable into the power port on the side of the SATA hard drive. Follow the power cable running out of the current hard drive and insert it next to it on the motherboard. Pull out the ribbon cable, which has three different connection ports: one on each end of the cable and one in the middle. The connection port on the middle inserts into the slave drive and is slightly different than the other two ends (the pins built into the port are in different locations than the other ends). Insert the middle connection port into the ribbon port on the back end of the SATA hard drive. Plug one of the opposite ends of the cable (doesn't matter which one) into the SATA connection port on the motherboard (your current hard drive is inserted here). Once connected, this completes your slave drive connection. Second SATA 2 Hard Drive as a Slave b> Installing a second hard drive in your desktop PC or notebook is an option used to increase hard disk space without losing or transferring the data from your original hard drive. Using this method not only increases hard disk space, it also increases the virtual memory space for the Windows operating system, increasing operational efficiency. One of the ways in which a BIOS can recognize the second hard drive is to boot it as a slave drive, with the primary hard drive booted as a master drive.

Turn the PC off and remove the desktop chassis. Refer to the pin connector diagram. This is displayed on the sticker, on top of the hard drive, for the position of the slave pin. Place the plastic connector on the slave pin as detailed on the diagram. Connect the hard drive to the power and IDE/SATA cable. Ensure the other ends are connected to the motherboard. Use the screws to mount the drive. Replace the desktop chassis. Turn on the PC. Enter the BIOS, by default this can be done by pressing F2. If this does not work consult your motherboard manual. In the BIOS, press right until the boot device tab is highlighted. Set the slave drive to boot following the primary drive. Read the bottom line and use the relevant key to save the settings. Restart the PC.
Hope it helps.

How do I install an extra SATA cd/dvd drive in my PC

Hello, I will be the technician that will be assisting you today. My name is Norman-Wynne Damstra.

Welcome to Fixya, Peter Symonds.

Read the big label that the manufacture has put on your DVD drive, you need information regarding Master and Slave jumper positions.

You need to set the main DVD drive as Master and the other as a Slave or secondary drive. However some-times this configuration is set in the BIOS/CMOS of your computer system.

Install the drives by removing an available 5.25" plastic drive cover on the front of your PC tower case. Now secure the new DVD drive to the chassis with the included M3 mounting screws.

Use two screws on each side to ensure that the drive is secure.
Insert both the SATA power and Data connections into the drive and the SATA data connector into an available SATA connector on the mainboard.

Once completed power on your computer and enter the BIOS/CMOS by tapping the delete key as soon as your computer powers on.

Your will get to the BIOS/CMOS screen where you need to find the heading for Master and Slave drives. You should see your primary hard drive and both DVD drives.

Enter into the DVD drive settings and set the one to master and other to slave.

Save and exit setup, usually F10. Read options at the bottom of the BIOS/CMOS screen.

It's as easy as that.

Take care!

I have a working hard drive (Barracuda 7200.7) from a 2007 HP Pavilion a430n that contains files that I would like to retrieve.

Your description has me confused. I'm not clear on which power and data cables you are using. You described pulling one cable from first hard drive and connecting it to your second drive. Extra power connections should have been in a loose wire bundle somewhere in the computer. (Often they are tucked into an unused drive bay.)

The SR1720NX has 2 SATA controllers and two IDE controllers. Thus it can have 2 SATA and 4 IDE devices. The computer sometimes shipped with a SATA hard drive or an IDE hard drive. In all cases, the hard drives must be connected to the data cable (and to the motherboard) and then the power connection from the power supply has to be connected. So there should be 2 cables plugged into each drive. The optical drive is usually an IDE drive for this model, also a master drive.

The IDE power connection is a large 4-pin Molex connector; the SATA power cables are a smaller 5 pin connector. There is also a small 4 pin connector that powers a floppy drive, if present. IDE data cables are a wide 40-pin ribbon cable (sometimes an 80-pin cable for master/slave). The SATA data cable is a 15 pin cable.

First make sure that the jumper on the drive from the A430n is across the two pins in the second position (counting from the side away from the power connection). This is the cable select option. Next make sure that the IDE cable is firmly connected to both drives and the motherboard. (I've sometimes loosened the data cable while connecting the drives.) Finally check that the appropriate power cables are firmly connected to all the drives. Then power up the computer. (With the second drive on the Slave connection, if the device on the Master connection isn't powered up/recognized, then weird things may occur.)

BTW: you should be alert to the power needs for the computer. The original power supply could be overloaded with the extra drive. You might be better off using an external drive enclosure (USB) or a USB/SATA/IDE dongle that leaves the drive out in the open. Connect these with extreme care following the directions for when to connect the power supply. Some enclosures won't work without reformatting the drive - you do not want one of those.

I hope this helps.

I have two hard drives in my tower How can I make it boot so that both hdd show in one os And it goes straight to windows

Windows will see both hard disks when Windows opens up.
For IDE/PATA hard drives the boot hard disk (C drive) must contain the Windows operating system and it must be jumpered as the Master drive. The other hard drive must be jumpered as a Slave drive if it is on the same data cable as the Master drive.
After Windows has been installed and this Slave drive has been partitioned and formatted Windows will see this hard drive as D: Drive which can be used as data storage etc.
If you have SATA hard drives you need to connect each SATA hard drive on its own SATA cable/controller.

I am about to take a WD1600JD hardrive out of one PC and put into a newer PC as a slave hardrive. What should the poistion of the jumper be. Thanks

This is a SATA drive, and they don't use master and slave jumpers. They are serial devices, and each SATA drive is connected to its own motherboard connector. The master and slave jumpers are only on the parallel interface drives (with the wide data cable), since two drives could be used on the same motherboard controller. All you need to do is install the drive, plug in the power and data cables, and Windows will assign the drive a new letter.

DVD drive is not recognised. There is power to the drive but no drive letter in My Computer and no discs will play.

The data connection to the motherboard is not plugged in, it's loose or it is not set to slave or master.

mariolands_21.jpg
You need to open the PC and see if it is connected. If it has a SATA connection, make sure the SATA cable it's plugged into the DVD drive and into the motherboard. If it is a IDE cable, then make sure it is properly plugged into the DVD drive and motherboard. If it is plugged in, make sure the jumper is set to cable select.

Him I need to recover data from an Hitach Travelstar HDD N155 ? Is it a SATA ? Do I need to connect it to a pc as a slave using a cable ? Which kind of cable ?

This drive is an IDE type and not SATA, which means you will need an adapter like this one so you can plug a data cable and provide power. You can then connect the drive to a regular desktop PC.

You can set the jumper on the drive to make it a slave and hook it up on the same IDE cable as your primary hard drive, but the jumpers on the laptop drives are teeny little ones and I personally find them hard to deal with. What I do is unplug the data cable to the optical drives which are on the second IDE channel, then plug the laptop drive cable there. Then the drive can remain jumpered as master.

Another option is not to bother opening the PC at all, but to get an external hard drive case like this. Then you could just plug the drive in on a USB port and copy your data, and you'd have an external drive available for future use.

Good luck with the recovery, and thanks for using Fixya!

How do you connect two hard drives to a computer?

1. For SATA, you just need a second SATA cable to plug it in and a power cable from the power supply.
2. For IDE, you will need a second IDE cable to plug the second hard drive, AND you will have to set both hard drives jumpers either to cable select or one Master and the other one Slave, based on which one you have the operating system.

I bought a hard drive HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 and want to know how to tap into the power of the PC, or is that enough to connect to SATA cable only? and also how I would put it in slave, because it is...

The SATA hard drive has two cables, one for power and the other is a data cable.
There are no jumpers on a SATA hard drive to configure as a Master or Slave. this is done by configuring the SATA controller.
