Empisal dress maker 270d

Hi I'm using an Empisal 270D dress maker. I was busy sewing a onesie when suddenly my stitches started skipping badly or loosely. I've tried re-threading, playing around with the tension, and when I've changed something I test it on a piece of off cut material and then it seems fine but after a few stitches it acts up again. What can I do to fix this problem?

Sounds like your tension is vibrating off to a least tension position, When the machine does this again check your tension button. Hope this is the solution?

SOURCE: I bought a 2nd hand

I haven't been able to locate a manual for this machine at first look. The only Empisal manual I did find was called "Expandamatic" at this site http://sewingonline.co.uk/empisal.html there is an image of the model. Or you could try www.2instructions.com or www.manualfox.com and see if they have something available to buy.

However, http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/bb/sewingmachines.htm this website gives lots of general information on sewing machines, how to use, basic threading up in a general way and other tips and tricks.

In general terms most sewing machines will have the following controls:
stitch length selector/dial - to choose length of stitch, usually goes from zero to 4, normal straight stitch would be 2.5.

Stitch width selector - early models only did straight and zigzag, so by adjusting this knob you would set how wide the zig zag stitch is. If your machine does other stitch combinations, then you would use this to set the width for those too. Again, probably ranges from zero (straight stitch would be zero) up to 4.

A tension dial setting to adjust the tension on the top thread, usually set to 5, but would range from zero to 10.

If your machine does anything more than straight and zigzag, then it would have some other dial or stitch selector or even a cam that you insert to get these other stitches.

I hope this helps you get started with your machine.

SOURCE: My daughter removed the tension

Hi. Start by taking everything back off. There should be the knob, a spring, two matching discs and one disc that is smaller than the other two. The two matching discs should go on first and should mirror one another with the flaring edges both facing out from where the discs touch. Then goes the smaller disc, then the spring with the larger end on the discs. Screw on the knob with the numbers facing out, all the way down till it stops and that should be the maximum setting. Back it off all the way to where the tension is indicated as 3 for your starting point. By the way, do all of that with the foot lowered. Raising the foot should separate the tension discs, which makes it possible to pull your work piece out from under the sewing area without breaking the thread.

Good Morning: Can you tell me how to use the battery with the charger and the plug to at the same time to work my swivel sweeper ins instead of buying a battery

Page 6 and 7 of the manual. The cleaning tool is funny, as it is actually a 'Quik Unpik', stitch ripper used in dress making and sewing. You lift the top cover off the brushes to clean.

Why is my sewing machine skipping stitches

If the needle is slightly bent it won't pick up the lower thread all the time. Try using a new needle.

Hi I have a Janome 419S or 423S, the problem seems to be my hook race unit keeps getting loose and then the thread jams up. What can be done? Please

A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in thehook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towardsyou (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. Alwaysturn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you(clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam yourmachine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position beforeyou start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam yourmachine in the bobbin case. If youhave an older model sewing machine with a shuttle hook, then you can alsofollow these: 1. Disconnect the sewing machine from any power source.Loosen the thumb screw on the left side of the sewing machine body and removethe cover to expose the needle bar. This is the shaft that extends down andthat you attach a needle to for sewing. Open the shuttle race and remove the bobbinand bobbin case. 2. Turn the hand wheel toward you until the needle hasreached the lowest point of the stroke. The hook should be at the top of itsstroke inside the shuttle race. Loosen the set screw for the needle bar on theupper part of the machine, this is located on the needle bar bushing (thecollar that the needle bar slides through when making a stitch). The needle barshould slide easily up and down. 3. Turning the wheel again, adjust the position of the tipof the needle so that the upper part of the needle eye is just below the bottomedge of the hook inside the shuttle race. Once in position, re-tighten the setscrew on the needle bar bushing. Do not allow the needle bar to slip whiledoing this. 4. Replace the bobbin and bobbin case and close the shuttlerace. Thread and plug in your machine. Using a sizable scrap of cloth, sew aseam to check to see if there are any skips in the stitching. If there arestill skips re-adjust the timing again until you can sew without any skipped stitches. 5. When proper timing has been achieved replaces the coveron the needle bar and tighten the thumb screw. Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

I'm new to sewing. It did not come with an operating guide and I find the stitch settings really confusing I would like to know how to set it to do a basic straight stitch for a simple dress pattern....

Look for the row of straight vertical lines. This is the straight stitch. There will also be a number dial for stitch length. Use a piece of scrap to find the length of stitch you want. Make sure you have the bottom feed lever or button activated. This will operate the textured plates that come up from underneath to move the material forward or reverse. Also, make sure you drop the presser foot lever before you start. Hold both threads, manually lower the needle to the first stitch starting point and use the pedal from there on. When you press the pedal, you can let go of the threads.
