Where can I find the serial number on a Japanese made bass guitar it is a fender jazz bass 4 string and how much did this bass guitar cost brand new or how much are these bass guitars cost new today?

Jon has told you about the serial number.

Don't get Fender Fenders confused with Squier Fenders either.

Once you know the serial number you should be able to find out the year here

http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx

Then you could try Googling:

"reverb.com Fender Jazz Bass (year)"

and you will see a range of used prices.

I have a fender base serial number 248173 when was it made and how much is it worth. thanks you

Firstly, it is a Fender Bass, not base (sorry, I'm an old bass player).

Yours is a good one, made at the Fender factory in Fullerton USA, in 1968, and is #38173 in that year.

Depending on condition it is worth anywhere from $3000-$5000, but you would get lower, silly offers. Keep it, don't sell !!

Wiring change from Fender

Standard J-Bass wiring is parallel. Not series.
http://www.mojotone.com/support/Schematics-for-Pickups-and-Guitars/Jazz-Bass-Wiring-Diagram

To run the pickups in series, the ground of one pickup would feed into the hot of the next. That's not what comes from the factory.

Fender serial number look up

The "S" means it was manufactured in the 1970's. The "8" means this was made in 1978.This serial number would suggest this is an 1978 American P Bass. Depending on the condition, you should be expecting to get in between $1200 and $2000. But always remember, a guitar is only worth what people are willing to pay.
