Brushes are not rotating, V-belt seems too loose

Hello,

I realized last week, that the main brush is not rotating. I took the bottom cover off and realized that the existing v-belt seems too loose. But I could not figure out how it could become bigger overnight. Today I bought a new v-belt and also a new drive belt at Sears and after installing the new belts it seems that the new v-belt is again too loose and does not grab the brush-wheel tightly enough to rotate ir. The one roll that is driven by the broad drive belt which does rotate fast, but the v-belt is not moved along as it seems to be too big. Nothing else seems loose or moved. HELP!!!

Thanks!

I found the problem! There is a small wheel/pulley that keeps the v-belt tight and it was stuck. I moved the carpet height control lever and the brush on/off lever back and forth a few times and that pulley popped back into the right position. The old v-belt was not too loose afterall. But Sears only charged $3.88 for that new belt, so no big loss. Sears has the lowest prices on parts, anyhow. My self propelled steel cable has broken and I looked online for a replacement. They range from $12.95 to over $20 +s/h. Sears sells them for $3.92 and I can pick it up from the store with no s/h charges.

If you have this problem of the brushes not spinning, try what worked for me first.

I experienced the same problem and tried your solution and yes, there is some tension on the belt but when used on carpet, the brushes stop spinning. Apparently, there is not enough tension on the belt. I don't know how to fix this problem. Any ideas?

Please confirm the specifications of the V-Belt you need. Is the belt loose due to the lack of specifications? Because there are many kinds of V-Belts, you should bring the old belt with you when you buy the V-belt.

You can check our website to check the kinds of V-Belt.

V-belt suppose to be loose (according the manual). I just replaces it (and was worry that it is loose), but brush rotating fine. So your problem is somewhere else.

The v belt goes over the small silver wheel pully, not under. it is actually quite simple. I had to find out the hard way. I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the belt and why it was so loose!

Electrolux Z61a brush not rotating

There should be a rubber belt somewhere along that roller, probably in the middle, behind the bottom cover plate, Remove the plate. That belt may have just slipped off the motor shaft, but it may be broken.

The belt could possibly be installed in either of two ways. The motor shaft is not parallel to the beater bar (brushes), so the belt must twist to wrap around both the motor shaft and the beater bar. If it's twisted one direction, the beater bar will rotate the correct direction (as if drying to pull the vacuum forward). Twisted the wrong way, it'll rotate the opposite direction. Try it one way, then bump the power switch to verify that the brush is rotating the correct direction before putting the bottom cover plate back on.

Brush keeps shutting off . DC39 Animal Canister.

The belt that turns the rotating brush is loose. Make sure it is on correctly or replace with a (new) tighter belt. This will require you to unscrew a few screws on the bottom & remove the cover. Then remove the roller.

Need to replace belt and cannot figure how to take it apart to get at the belt --- Took Screws off on the bottom but could not get to the belt

You have already removed the screws so lift the brush cover off. Then grasp rotating floor brush at both ends and lift. Clean strings, hair and other debris from rotating brush, paying close attention to the brush ends. Clean the debris from motor pulley and drive belt areas.Grasp old drive belt and remove from motor pulley. Place new drive belt over motor pulley and stretch other end over rotating floor brush in the space between the bristles. Place the ends of the rotating floor brush down into slots on the sides. Turn the rotating floor brush by hand several times in the direction of motor pulley. If installed properly, drive belt will center itself on rotating brush. Reposition brush cover and screw back into place. I hope that this helps you!

Now that I just fixed my Lux Legacy canister vacuum, I need help on my other Electrolux Regency Series upright! The vacuum works fine but the rotating brush does not work and the brush motor does not turn...

There are a couple rectangular holes on the bottom of the power nozzle, beside the wheels. These have tabs in them that need released with a standard screwdriver.
rogerpotts_10.jpg Once they release, turn the vacuum over and lift cover of power nozzle at the back. This pulls the front of the cover out of the lip on the "bumper".
Once this is done, you'll need to unscrew the screw at each end of the brush. Lift the brush out and thoroughly clean it, including the ends.
rogerpotts_9.jpg
Check the wiring to make sure they're connected to the terminals of the motor. Also, check the belt for wear and tear. These belts can last for five years or more, but if it looks bad a good time to replace it is while you have the power head apart.
When reassembling the vacuum, ensure the belt is fitted properly around the motor shaft and brush.
Insert the front of the cover first, ensuring the edge fits neatly beneath the lip on the bumper all the way around. It takes a little manipulating to press the back into place. Make sure both tabs click into the locked position. Turn the vacuum over and reinstall screws. Try to rotate brush by hand a few times.
At this point, plug the vacuum in and turn it on. If the power head doesn't run, press the reset button. If the power head motor still doesn't run, it could be due to loose or disconnected wires that lead to the reset switch, a bad reset switch, or even a bad motor. The vacuum needs to be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for further diagnosis and repair.

The brushes and the belt are not rotating. The power seems fine and there is suction. I have no other history on this problem since I was given this almost new unit over Thanksgiving. Where should I be...

If you've got suction, but the brushes and belt are not rotating, then either the belt has come off the motor shaft, or the belt is broken and just looks OK.

Remove the bottom cover off the floor head and check that the brush roller turns freely. If it does, then check the belt.

Let me know if you need additional repair information.

Anyone know why my Bissell Proheat 2X Turbo Model 9300's brushes won't turn anymore

If the Brushes don't rotate, & you have two brushes; 1). Turn unit on side. ( Make sure unit is up-pluged) 2). Rotate the front brush roller, if the second roller moves at same time, 3). Locate a small ribbed belt that goes from the further back roller, to a small ribbed pully. (Gates belt #177-3m5) ( on side under a clear cover) The belt may not be broken, but may have carpet fuzz / lint covering the belt ribs, causing the belt to slip. If that belt is OK and you find that the small pully doesn't turn the belt/rollers, the problem is with a small internal direct drive motor, that drives the brush rollers. At this point return the unit, as Bissell has a design defect & is using cheap parts.

My dyson D17 is making an incredibly loud noise, like grinding, when the bottom brush rotates.

Remove the bottom cover plate and rotate the brush by hand. Look for things that make noise like stones caught in the brush path, bad brush bearings, bad drive belt.

Main Brush Failure

first check if the brush motor is turning before you spend money on a new brush roller and belt. remove the belt by unscrewing the screws holding the brush cover ( the part touching the floor ) and slip the belt of the rotor. turn the vacuum on, and the brush on while the vacuum is in a reclined position. if the motor is not moving, you need a new motor.

Bissell upright vac, brush on bottom does not rotate

The front brush motor will not engage until the power is turned on and the handle is in the down position. In the upright position the brush motor wont engage. Typical faults will be the belt is broken and needs replacing or the fornt brush motor needs replacing.

Brushes don't spin but it still has suction

The brushes are usually connected to a motor by a rubber belt. These can wear out and snap (particularly if the brushes are clogged with hair). Usually the bottom of the vacuum can be removed by undooing a few screws and gently pulling it downwards. If the bottom doesn't want to come off, hunt around for any screws you may have missed - the designers seem to think it's funny to hide them. Once the bottom is off, check the belt and remove any hair wrapped around the ends of the brush bar. If the belt is broken you will need to find a replacement.
