SOURCE: swapping a hard drive

You should be able to use that Hard Drive in the Compaq. Once transferred, you might be have to download the drivers to make sure all your devices work. I would recomend that you format the drive and reinstall windows.

How to connect your hard drive to your motherboard The first thing you have to...

How to connect your hard drive to your motherboard

The first thing you have to figure out is what type of hard drive you have, a PATA or a SATA drive.

PATA = Parallel ATA
This type of drive uses the older IDE connections. Most of your current motherboards still have aleast one IDE connection to support the ROM drives on the market that have not moved over to SATA connections but you can still connect a hard drive to this connection if needed. The thing to keep in mind is that you can only connect 2 IDE devices to one IDE connection on the motherboard.

Here is an example of an IDE cable. If you can see there are tabs on the cable to make sure you line up the pins properly.

SATA = Serial Advanced Technology Attachment
This type is now the standard that most hard drives are. Also note that alot of your ROM drives are switching over to this format as well.

Here is an example of a SATA cable.

In regards to power connectors If you are using a PATA drive then you will use the Molex power connector. Note some of the early SATA drives use this power connector as well.

For the SATA drives you would use the SATA power connector. Note if your power supply does not have this connection you can get an adapter that goes from a Molex connection to the SATA connector.

Next you will need to find the connectors for the hard drive on your motherboard. Below if pictures of the 2 connection types.

I need to know what order to put the wires from the mother Bord to the floppy drive to the cd Rom\burner to the hard drives

The floppy drive has it own data cable and does not connect to the same cable as the hard drive and CD ROM/R-W drive.
If the hard drive and CD drive are IDE devices, then the hard drive should be the connected to the connector at the end of the IDE cable and the jumper on the hard drive set to Master. The CD drive should be connected to the middle connector and its jumper set to Slave. The other end connector should be connected to the Primary IDE connector on the motherboard.

A friend unplugged all wires frm inside the compaq i need instructions on how to reconect it so it wrks again

First check your hard drive fixed with screws in cabinet. Then if it(your hard drive) is a parallel it must have 4 pins for power and around 40 pin on its back. Just find a four pin connector that will coming out from pc power supply or smps. Just connect it to your drive for power and find 40 pin connector that is also connected to motherboard on its other side insert that plug in hard drive carefully. Don't use force to connect it because it can bend or break pins of hard drive.
Or
If you have sata hard drive its also have slim face power jack comes from power supply or smps. Its other cable is small faced some time red or some time black in colour connected on motherboard on one side and just take it other side and connect it on hard drive.
For future never try play with your pc like this because it can cause hardware problem in your pc.

I need help installing a second seagate 1tb internal hard drive on a compaq presario sr5502fh? dont know where the data connection for the second hard drive goes.

If you haven't changed the motherboard from the time you bought it, then there must four onboard sata connectors on the motherboard, refer below picture; c24ab14.jpg

If you haven't installed four sata drives, then there must be at least 3, you can connect the new hard drive on any port, no matter Master or Slave, Primary or Secondary, it'll automatically set it for you. You also no need to worry about the cable, both the ends are same, it works on any direction; 80e9306.jpg

Same thing with the power cable, you can join it on any power cable.. daeb671.jpg

I hope this helps, if you have problem with this or if in case your motherboard is different, please let me know;
Good luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Conections

Hi peju90,

If you've gutted out the old dell computer, then your only talking about a empty case. Put all the right chips and cpu's that the Asus board requires, and you should have no problem with the CD rom or any other hardware. Except if you try and put the hard disk from the dell, it will not have the same configurations, and probably be a bit crazy. But, reformat the drive to it's new board, and your home free.

The power connections will be the same as it was on the old Presario, if you have the old power supply then nothing changes on that. You'll need to hook up the front connectors for USB and Hard drive lights, reset etc, but that would be the ugliest senario. Meaning the csse fit a special connector that the board doesn't carry. In that case you to option, either cut the special connectors and replace them with the ones from the old Presario case, or don't connect them, all but the power, you're gonna need that hooked up, one way or the other.

But, that's as tough as it gets my friend. A case is a case is a case.

Good Luck

Will a compaq 5321sr see a newer sea 1tb hard drive?

instead of using another latop to get your data back, buy an external USB caddy for the hard drive, you can pick these up for as little as £3, then connect your hard drive to it and plug it into another computer to access all your files on it, once u have all your data off it you can format it and have yourself an external hard drive.

1 Solution for ''I have a Compaq Presario 7000 replacing the C harddrive the BIOS set up does not find harddrive''

possible causes:
1. jumper set incorrectly on hard drive itsself.
2. data or power cable not connected properly to hard drive
3. data cable backwards in hard drive or motherboard. (should always have the red stripe on the data cable towards the power connector on the hard drive and on pin number one of the motherboards' primary IDE connector)
check all off these...IF you are installing a SATA hard drive then you may need to install sata drivers on your computer.. Please post again if i misunderstood your question..

Help wiring normal hp compaq eplaced power supply no power

I am assuming this is a desktop and not a laptop. On the power supply you have a number of connectors. A 24 pin connector (like a lego block) or a 20 pin (leg block) with a 4 pin (in the pattern shown on a dice) Look at your motherboard and check whether you have any connectors which match these and plug them in. They only go one way round as they are shaped. You will need to plug in the wide white 4 pin connectors to everything else like your CD, your hard drives. The floppy drive has a separate smaller white connector. If you have a sata drive these are usually black and flat. Basically you need to connect some wires to your motherboard and one power cable to each of your devices, hard drive, CD/DVD, floppy drive. It doesnt matter which one you choose. Just one that will fit. If you have a souped up graphics card there may be a 6 pin connector for that either on the board itself or on the graphics card. The 6 pattern is the same as a 6 on a dice also.
Good luck.
