Cold water will only trickle into washing machine

Our machine is about 14 years old. In the last few months, the cold water is only trickling into the machine. The hot water runs just fine. A few weeks ago, my husband took out the tiny thimble looking filter baskets, as they were caked with stuff. The water flowed great for about three days, and now it is back to a trickle. Any ideas of what this could be? Or is it just time to get a new one? It is also stopping during the wash cycle every few loads right before the drain/rinse cycle should start.

Thanks for your help!

Cold water rinse doesn't come in very hard. Just a trickle. Warm works fine. I just had the water shut off due to a water main break which is now fixed and water is back on. Warm wash fills fine. Cold...

Remove the cold water hose and check the screens for debris and clean. Also look inside the water inlet valve where the hose connects there should be a screen in there remove and clean. If this doesn't fix it the water inlet valve will need replacing. Here is a link that will walk you thru cleaning and inspecting the valve http://appliancehelponline.com/topwaterinletvideo.html

Cold water good for a few minutes then slows to a trickle. Shut off for a few hours and cold water good again for a few minutes. Inlets are clear. Is this normal behaviour for a dying valve?

Yes, it will fail soon. it is beat to go ahead a order a new inlet valve assembly asap. the pressure sensors that are housed in the valve assembly are failing.

Cold water in the rinse cycle of the washer just trickles

Sounds like cold water solenoid is not opening all the way, its easy to replace, and is found inside the wash machine where the hose connects

Cold water trickles, hot water fills fast as normal

where your water lines connect there is a sc reen inside and if it is clogged with rust lime and or mineral deposit. it needs cleaned out. you can pull it out with a ice pick or something pointy. Check your screen first and if that doesn't fix ya then yes replace the unit.
