Weak Flames on Propane Grill

I have a Kenmore Elite grill with 6 burners. When I light any 3 of the burners in any order it works fine. As soon as I light any one of the remaining burners, all of the flames become so weak the are almost non existant. I have cleaned the grill and replaced the propane tank with a freshly filled one and still have the same problem. Any suggestions?

It is possible that your burners are clogged. Clean the burner ports with a paperclip (not a toothpick).

I have a brinkmann 3 burner grill, the middle burner flames, but the outside ones do not, i just bought it today. How do I light the outside burners?

I am not sure, but I think the Brinkman uses the ignitor to light one burner and the other burners light after the first one allowing the flame to "crossover".

I have a Kenmore Quantum grill and all of a sudden the burners do not want to ignite. The propane tank is new. I tried with a lighter to ignite the burners and nothing. The ignitor button doesn't...

The problem you're having is related to the OPD Valve in the Propane Tank. But, it is solvable by following the instructions below.

1. Turn the gas tank valve OFF and disconnect the hose from the tank.

2. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose to the tank.

3. Open the tank valve VERY, VERY SLOWLY (Slow motion, slow).

4. Once the tank valve is fully open, light the burner farthest from the tank first and set the burner
control knob on HIGH. Does the flame height look correct for being set on HIGH? If so, light
the remaining burners the same way. Do all the burner flames look correct? If so, you solved
the problem. Remember, to always open the tank valve Very, Very Slowly.

If that didn't solve the problem, you will need to replace the grill's Hose/Regulator Assembly. It runs about $30.00 at any home center or hardware store that sells grills & accessories. If you replace it, turn the tank valve ON Very, Very Slowly.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Happy Grilling and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I just bought a brand new kenmore elite grill (for $199). I am new to grilling. The burners seem low - the one on the far left in the back has a flame but all other flame levels are low. Also, I cannot...

If the burners are set to the high setting and the flames are still very low, you may have a bad propane tank. The valves on the tanks go bad sometimes. Take the tank back to where you bought it and tell them you think the valve is bad. They should exchange it for free assuming it still feels full. This has happened to me before, i thought there was something wrong with the grill and it was just a bad tank.

When I light my grill only one side of the burner has a flame, on all 3 burners. I cleaned everything and even cleaned each hole in the burners. What's next?

This is a common problem with grills purchased after 2001. There is a new safety feature inside the regulator called a 'surge protector'. If you open your propane bottle valve too quickly or if you try attaching a tank with the tank valve in the 'open' position, the propane wants to 'surge' into the grill.

When the propane surges into the regulator (located on the grill hose) the 'surge protector' (inside the regulator) kicks on. When this happens you will not be able to get your grill lit, and if you do, it will be a small blue flame and the grill will not heat up.

So what to do if you trip the surge protector and can't get your grill to light or heat up?

Shut the tank off and shut the valves on the grill off. Disconnect the tank from the grill hose. When you disconnect the tank from the hose you will hear the excess pressure of propane release. This is an indication that you have re-set the regulator's surge protector.

Now that you have deactivated or reset the surge protector, reconnect the tank. Make sure the valve on the tank and the valves on the grill are in the closed and in the off position. After you reconnect the tank to the hose, SLOWLY open the tank valve (making sure the valves on the grill are in the OFF position).

Since you have slowly opened the valve on the tank, the propane did not surge into the regulator and the surge protector did not activate.

Now open 1 valve on the grill and light it. You should get a nice flame. If your grill has more than one valve, open each following valve in sequential order to extend the flames to the other burners.

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps.

Loss of pressure on Kenmore 16322

I can tell you EXACTLY what is wrong. Remove the tank and open all valves to the grill. Reconnect the tank and turn it on just slightly. Relight the grill.
Ther is a safety device in the tank that needs to be reset. The only way to do it is removing the tank.
