It'll do sound, but shows nothing while recording video and plays back nothing.

CANON relied on Sony to install their CCD (The image sensor) on most of their mini camera recorders. The mount for this CCD Component is defective. Canon recognizes this and currently, (2009) offers a 100% free replacement of this part.
The effect of the malfuctioning CCD is as you describe, everything works except there is no image captured.
I took mine in and they repaired it, no questions asked, except that I may want a few other things fixed up while they were there. I declined the additional work and it didn't cost me a cent.

Head down to Walmart and pickup a JVC head cleaner. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. Also, change the brands of tapes that your using to either Panasonic, JVC or Fuji brand- or the professional versions of ANY brand. Something else: Only re-record on any one tape to a maximum of three times, with only ONCE being recommended.

The most likely cause for this is a faulty external microphone input jack. They are designed to disable the onboard mics when an external mic is being used. The switch that acomplishes this is probably stuck closed so the camera thinks there is an external microphone attached. This will require major disassembly to repair and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be done by a qualified service technician.
