My Vaio cannot connect to the internet although it is able to connect to my home network and can browse and transfer files between other machines on the network. It just cant connect to the web. The browser times out. I tried resetting the winsock and clearing the arp cache but to no avail. I have Win XP SP2. The other machines on the network have no problems. Does anyone have any suggestions?
WOW SP3 was the culprit!
Here are several links to read and decide whether to use SP3 or not. I personally created my own SP3 cd from an SP3 iso file and installed it on my systems. I have not encountered any problems .(knock on wood)

From what I've been able to tell so far, the same is true of Windows Media Player. The update does not install the current Media Player 11 as a part of the fixes or additions.

Sounds like your computer has not been assigned or has lost the IP. Try turning off all of your PCs. Then, power off your modem and router. After 10-15 seconds, turn on the equipment in the sequence:
1. modem (wait till all the lights come on)
2. router
3. computer

Gpetti2009: I connect via a home network and router to cable but that is not the problem as other machines on the network connect OK.
Ipconfig comes back with a valid IP address. And, I can still transfer files over my network between the problem notebook and other computers. It just cant connect to the web, either via browser or via ftp. Programs can't update themselves either. I'm thinking maybe the hosts file, or something else specific to the web. I am certain it has absolutely nothing to do with hardware, I'm convinced it's a Windows problem. Anyone got any other suggestions? Thanks for your suggestions.
ipconfig reports a valid ip address.
I tried uninstalling service pack 3, and now I can connect to the web. So while I appear to be OK now, I still would like to know why SP3 caused my problems and if it is worth my while to try to get my PC to work properly if I reinstall SP3.
