California has more stringent rules on CATs. The cost for one is about 500 but could be as high as 1000. The nice thing is that they have a warranty that is pretty good so you might be able to say it was a warranty failure if you dont have it replaced when the work is done. Shop labor is going to be expensive especially at a dealer. They charge about 200 an hour minimum. The heads might need to be planed to make sure they are not warped. I am thinking 5400 even with a 1000 CAT is kind of high.

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2013

my mechanic said the cost of the CAT was 950 or so and he gave me labor for free. replacing the gaskets and all the hoses was 3600 or so with labor then add in all CA taxes

  • Brad Brown Aug 08, 2013

I guess that is about right, the problem is that the shops have a flat rate charge and if they can do it in less time, they dont cut you any slack. To give you an idea of the job, remove air intake, intake manifold, fuel lines, drain radiator, remove exhaust manifold, remove head, clean cyllinders, remove gasket, check for warp on the head, if warped plane the head, replace the gasket, replace all the parts, change the oil and coolant. I dont know why hoses were replaced. There can be a lot that can go wrong too.

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2013

on the hoses i am not totally certain. it seems like this is an iterative process and you can't determein B is messed up till you fix A then downward. Had i known at the beginning this would cost 5400 i would say junk it. i appreciate you help. you have been awesome.

I would wait on the cat. Have the heads and sensors done and see if the cat burns the coolant off.

my mechanic says it was burning the coolant off and since i am in California the converter is alot more expensive. The entire repair seems high to me but i am not too sure

  • Brad Brown Aug 08, 2013

When the head gasket failed, coolant entered the cylinders and was turned to steam and entered the exhaust. It may have fouled the oxygen sensors which is the up and down sensors that the mechanic is talking about. Depending on the antifreeze that you used, the issue might be a silicon additive that is in the coolant and it can cause the cat to become fouled. I would still wait to see if you fail emissions before replacing the CAT. It might not have affected it but you cannot be sure without an emissions test.

assuming i need a CAT is that price for everything high? $5400?

remove black plastic relay cover in plastic underhood fuse box and activate relay9006980.jpg with a very small screwdriver and ignition on. If starts, obviously the starter is fine, if not the starter is indeed bad and needs replacement so hold onto your ankles cuz it's gonna hurt.

SOURCE: Toyota 4runner catalytic converter replacement

YOU REMOVE THE 4 BOLTS BEFORE AND AFTER THE CAT.
ENSURE THE OLD INLET AND OUTLET GASKETS ARE REMOVED AND REPLACED BE FORE INSTALLING THE NEW CAT WITH NEW BOLTS.
ABOUT $800 FOR THE PART AND A HOURS LABOUR.
AN MUFFLER SHOP SHOULD BE ABLE TO INSTALL A UNIVERSAL
CAT FOR LESS.

SOURCE: I have been told that my catalytic converters are

you can do it yourself it will only cost the price of the catalytic converters, first i would disconnect them and visually inspect them if you see that they look like a honey comb with no obstruction of the holes than they are fine but if you see black residue or even some melting of the material than i would replace them. hope this helps you.

Where on a 1999 Volvo S80 is the o2 sensor located? And how much are o2 sensors?

Off the top of my head the Volvo has two catalytic converters. The 02 sensors are located just before and just after the catalytic converters so you have 4 total. Look at the exhaust lines and find your catalytic converters. On the top of the exhaust pipes you will see a cable going into each 02 sensor. That is the easiest way to spot them. 02 sensors can range in price from about $40 each (cheap ones) up to about $200 each for the over priced ones. You can get them at most car parts stores or online stores. I have found that online parts stores will usually have a better cost but you have to wait for delivery. Why are you wanting to replace them? Did you have a failure code (check engine) light come on? Do you know the code? If you have a bad one then only replace the one that the failure code tells you to do. Don't just replace them as they cost to much and most times it is unnecessary to replace all of them for a single sensor failure. If you have never done one before you need a special tool (socket) so you don't damage your sensor cables.

When i floor my 01 navigator it wont go it makes a popping sound in the throttle body

sounds like the cats are plugged up....remove the o2 sensors and see if it runs better. Mine would idle, but would pop and stumble when the gas was hit. Ran well for a long time but would stumble whwn floored, slowly got so bad couldnt drive it but it idled fine. Pulled the o2 sensors and started it up and all kinds of debris, junk, blew out. Replaced cats and o2 sensors and runs great. cost $2000.00 in parts. If you find that this is your problem, then check to see if the cats came apart and blew chunks into the muffler,,,,can cause a restriction and cook the new cats. Took me a lot of time to get this truck running right, but it sounds like youre dealing with the same issues..I went through the coil packs and chased engine codes for a week. Pull the o2 sensors and see what blows out; and if engine runs better.....hope this helps (spend some time pricing o2 sensors and y pipe with cars...you can save some $. good luck!

Catalytic Converter Replacement Repair Cost

code p0420 refers to catalytic converter system bank 1 --efficiency below threshold ===causes -- catalytic converter ---wiring---HO2S 2 sensor
The cheapest part to replace is the HO22S sensor so I would do that first. Bump the cat converter soundly with the heal of your hand and if it rattles it needs replacing as it will be cracked internally. Dismiss any tinny rattle as that will be the heat shield loose
The time taken to replace both in an accredited shop will be less than 1 hour so it may pay to shop around and compare prices on the converter and labour costs.

Blow head gasket

Hi, the head gasket is located between the engine block and the head, which is the part that covers the pistons and usually holds the spark plugs. depending on where the gasket blew you will be leaking oil and or radiator fluid out of or into the engine. repair cost would depend on make, model, and mechanic doing the work. the gasket itself will be the cheapest part of the total repair.
The gasket itself is cheap , the expensive part is the labor.

For a mechanic to replace it will cost at least $500 because there is a lot of work involved and a lot of other parts and gaskets are removed to get the cylinder off. It is made of various materials and depending on what materials it is made out of determines the cost.
