I have the original Digital Rebel and have several lenses that I use. The original 18-55 mm lens is not working so I purchased a 50 mm lens for every day use. I have taken it off and on several months now without any issues but now when I try to take it off to change the lens, it will turn just slightly when I push in the release button and then stops. It will not release nor turn any further. Help! ETA: The camera itself is almost six years old and never had any problems with it.
Take it to a service centre, let them deal with it, and fix the problem that has caused this.

There was a lot of discussion of this when the Mk II was new. Many people "fixed" it doing just the things you did. Also, some reported that mounting the lens on another camera "fixed" it. IIRC, in the end it ended up being a lens issue. IS module. Canon can repair.

There is dust on the imaging sensor, and it will need to be cleaned off. A local repair shop can take care of this, or search photography forums for proper technique. Note, improper cleaning can damage the sensor, so use caution.

Talked to canon support, they suggested to send lense in for review/repair. They said it could be the motor, I think it was a gear problem based on the noises and jerkiness of the focusing action while in manual focus (manual focus gave out as well). Cost TBD - "would definately be more than $50. I shopped around and elected to buy a new lense rather than try to hassle with the repair, shipping, insurance, and the wait, etc. Besides, I have a deadline that I need the lense for, so repair at Canon really became a non-option. I think the cost would've been pretty much the same in the end as the new lense, since this wasn't one of the costlier of lenses to begin with.

I've found the same thing with my D40x and the 18-55mm AF-S lens. I took a really close look at it and found that the mount on the lens is badly worn on all three of the bayonet tangs and one is cracked at the base. What happens in my case is that the lens has movement when mounted on the camera - just enough to stop the contacts from mating properly. Hence, no photos. Am taking it to Nikon to get it fixed. I suggest if this is your problem, that you take it to the repair man.

Have you tried to take picture by switching off the autofocus to manual focus in a prperly lit environment?
If it takes a picture, then it has something to do with your auto focus system of your camera. In such a case: try taking out the battery, the memory card etc and switch off the camera and keep it for like that for about 5 minutes. And then insert only the fully charged battery and try again.
If it still gives you a problem and keep trying to focus You will need to take it to the nearest Canon Service centre.
