The item "IMB_0541.MOV" could not be moved because "TOSHIBA EXT" cannot be modified.

There are several possible causes for this symptom. It's possible that the external hard drive isn't getting enough power. Make sure that it's power adapter is connected correctly and working. If it's powered through USB only, try connecting it to another USB port on your computer (avoid plugging it into USB hubs and using long and thin USB cables).

Unplug the hard drive completely for at least 10 seconds, power off your computer in the mean while, power it on again (not a direct restart) and see if it resolves the issue.

Try to connect the drive to another computer and see if the issue persists. If the drive has the same issue on several computers, there might be a severe problem with the drive. If that's the case, start shopping for a new external drive. There's a chance for simple data retrieval though. If it's the electronics in the enclosure, the actual hard disc drive is probably still fine. If that's the case, you can find a way to open the enclosure (do a Google search with the precise model name and you'll probably find a tutorial) and you can install the hard drive in a desktop computer, a hard-drive docking station or another enclosure. Try to find a computer-savvy cousin/nephew to help you with this.

I have 2 Hitachi 3 TB External USB Drive External Hard Disks that are not recognized by my Mac OS X 10.6.8. Have I bought the wrong ones?

have you formated your hard drives? are your black or white jumpers hooked to the pins on top of hard drive? if the hard drives are new chances are the jumpers are still in small plastic package.the jumpers are little peaces of plastic with two holes with metal in them. the jumpers go on were it says master if you are using 2 hard drives .the other hard drive the jumper goes were it says slave. if you are using 1 hard drive you put the jumper on cs.

My Maxtor 200GB external HD is not showing up on my Mac G4. I've tried USB & Firewire connections. Restarted the Maxtor then computer. Restarted computer, then Maxtor No good. Thanks for your...

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

This drive has failed electrically. Needs EPROM board. Any ideas

Replace the drive.

Some of the portable drives can be removed and placed into another enclosure. That is another route to explore especially if you need to retrieve data from it.

Usb 2.0 portable drive has (5pin mini) will only work with usb cable that came with canon camera. other brand new usb 2.0 cable won't work. Tried this with 2 different drives and also with mac and PC

Suggestions:
(best to worst)
1. Use a "Y" USB cable with that drive.
2. Use a shorter USB cable.
3. Use the new cables with the canon
4. Use a 2.0 hub

The drive should have come with a "split" USB cable (USB "Y" cable). The drive requires a "data" and a "power" connection to your computer.
Get one at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Office Depot/Max... ($10)... or Dollar store ($1.09)

Computer no longer reads drive

It sounds like a permissions issue, allways repair permissions after an update and dont use the machine while installing updates. If it will not repair permissions from disc utility then boot from the install disc, select language and on the page that appears there is a menu bar at the top, select utilities and disc utility and use that.
