I am attempting to connect

There are pins on the Sata drive that have to be set. The good part is that there is a diagram on the device that will tell you which settings are for Master/Primary and Slave. You want to set it up as a Slave.
Sometime the connection ribbon from *********** board will have master/slave written on them. These also need to be correct depending on the computer.

Sorry my HDD can't be

The noise is probably a repeatative clunk sound. If so then afraid its no good and you will need to buy a new one. I have been using WDD hard drives for years and they are the best. If you enter the bios you will most probably see that it is detected. The clunk is the head hitting the platter. Any data on the drive will not be readable. Srri

How can I format in

Open My Computer icon on the desktop. locate the hard disk you wish to format in FAT32. Make sure is not your main drive where windows was installed which is Drive C: Right click on the drive you want to format and select Format, a formatting window will pop out, there you see capacity which is the size of your hard drive,File system, and so on. Select the drop down menu under File system where we have NTFS and FAT32. Set it to FAT32. Under Format Options, Select Quick format and click Start. A warning message will pop out Click Ok to proceed. Wait a moment until the formatting is complete. Good luck.

There should be jumpers on the back of both hard drives. You need to set the primary hard drive jumper to MASTER and the secondary hard drive jumper to SLAVE. Here is a picture of the jumper settings.

If you are trying to use the drive in a windows XP system you will need a driver due to the fact its a SATA drive (very few are supported by Win XP) .
You should be able to find a Windows XP driver on the Western Digital website.
At the start of the Windows XP install process you will be asked to press F6 to load SATA drivers.
If my memory serves me right you will need to have the driver on a floppy disk to install them.
This should sort your problem.

I am going to purchase 1Tb HDD, I don't know how

If you are going to make an online purchase, you should purchase directly from Western Digital's E-commerce web-site. This will assure that you will have a "warranty" that has good value.

Note that Western Digital has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- if you are the owner of any Western Digital disk-drive, you should qualify for a discount on your online purchase of a new disk-drive, if purchased through their web-site.
