VCR eats tape when rewinding

I have the Mitsubishi HS-U781 VCR and it plays the tapes fine, but when I rewind without stopping the tape it won't rewind and just stops by itself and it's been eaten. If I stop the tape and then rewind it'll rewind it all the way to the beginning, which is great, but when I eject it's been eaten. Is there any way to fix this problem? Thanks, Levi

Emerson TV/VCR combo set chews up my VHS tapes !

Went to the damn manufacturer web page and it was not working . Went to the 800 tele and the clerk was no help either.

I think it is a small thing to fix only if one understood how the tapes wrork.

Maybe a short video on this would help.

A couple of possibilities: 1. Braking problems: When VCR goes from FFWD, REW, Play to stop, there are a pair of "brake pads" engaged to stop the reels, and prevent tape spillage out into the machine. These pads, often rubber like, are on levers which contact one side of each reel. If you take the cover off the VCR, and look down where the tape is loaded, you will like see these brake assemblies. If the rubber pad is missing, or lever pivot points gummied up, then this is your issue. 2. Take up reel isn't being engaged to take up the tape on tape eject. When a tape is loaded into the machine, tape is pulled from the cartridge and threaded into play ready position. When eject mode is engaged, the tape must be pulled back into the cartridge, or you will have tape hanging out the front end of the cartridge, and may get caught on the VCR internals, or at least be mangled by the cartridge door. The often issue here is likely the idler assembly pivot point is sticky. This idler pivots, moving from the take-up reel (right reel) to the supply reel reel (left one), depending on what mode is selected. FFWD & play to the right, left for REW. If this idler is gummed up at it's pivot point, movement will be sluggish at best, and might not be engaging the right reel quickly enough to pull tape in before tape eject. This idler is sitting right between the reels down where the tape sits. A little light oil on the pivot point may be enough to loosen it up. Otherwise it might need to be removed and the old grease removed, and a drop or two of light oil applied.

Quite often it is a cassette problem. The two winding reels run on plastic bases which often becomes very dry and the two reels do not run smoothly. Remove the outer casing and take the two tape reels and the tape out. Then apply a small amount of powdered graphite to the rubbing surfaces of the bottom casing. Reinstall the two reels, making sure to put the tapes in the correct positions around the tape posts, and then replace the outer casing. This often resolves the problem.

E-2 error what does that mean

E2 means: Loading motor locked in the unload direction. Usually(not always) happens with a going bad VCR tape on the rewind. Tape is becoming too difficult to rewind and/or VCR is getting tired. Eject tape. Discard tape as soon as practical, new tapes are cheap. To clear: Hold power on/off button for 8 seconds.

VCR started eating tapes.

When a VCR eats a tape, it can be cause by a couple things.

1. There is a rubber wheel called a "pincher wheel" that compresses the tape against the "capstan". The capstan is a shiny metal spindle connected to a motor. The pincher wheel can become worn and/or dirty (slick) from the oxide coating off of the tape. You can try cleaning the pincher wheel and capstan with alcohol or try using a re-grip solution on the pincher wheel. Last thing to do is replace the pincher wheel. Look to see that the pincher wheel is doing its job by pulling the tape through.

2. There is a small tire wheel called an idler tire. This tire pivots between the sending and pickup reels of the player. Its also used during fast forward & rewind as well as play. If the tire is worn, the tape won't be wound up as fast on the take-up reel as the sending reel during play. This means more tape is coming out of the cassette than can be wound up on the takeup reel. You can try using a re-grip solution on the idler tire or replace it.

Let me know if you need more information as to where to purchase these parts.
Yes - There are cassettes available that are made out of clear plastic that allow you see what's happening. You can also trick the player into thinking there is a tape. There are sensors (mechanical & infrared sensors) that you can bypass.

Good luck!

VCR eating tapes when attempting to rewind

VCRs are so cheaply priced these days that it's not worth the time and trouble to fix them or have them repaired. If you fix one worn or slipping belt, another problem isn't far behind.

VCR functions do not work (play, record, ...)

Sounds like the idler assembly isnt working. Without this assembly, the system cannot get the tape to actually move, and most systems will shut down if the tape isnt moving to prevent damage to the tape. In truth, this can be a complicatred repair, requiring the machine to be taken apart quite a bit. I would suggest taking this kind of a problem to a repair shop, but with the cost of simple VCR's coming down constantly, and the upcoming switch to DTV making the machines tuner obsolete, it would probably be more economical to just replace the machine.

Video tape gets eaten on rewind

Does the machine play tapes well? Clear steady picture and all? No tracking bars? wavering sound? Tape chewing is generally a problem with a bad Capstan Pinch Roller, Associated symptoms are as above. Please do recheck or confirm if any of the above problems are also present.
