YES, Zian it will work....BUT,....................

1) It is a PCI graphics card, and uses a PCI expansion slot.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2898922&CatId=319

The Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop PC's motherboard, has three long white PCI slots,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/techov.htm#1105465

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Dimension-2400-Desktop-Motherboard-System-Main-Board-F5949-K5148-G1548-/190750417467?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2c699c623b

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI

If one of those long white PCI slots is open, you can use a PCI graphics card.

Concerned that the graphics card uses DDR3 graphics memory, and your computer only uses DDR Sdram ram memory?

Don't be.

The graphics card has it's own processor (Graphics Processing Unit), and graphics memory.
It runs independent of the system resources; the Processor and Ram Memory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

The concern is the Power Supply.
Original power supply's maximum rated Wattage is either 200 Watts, or 250 Watts.

The above graphics card requires a minimum system requirement/power supply requirement; of 300 Watts.

I would recommend replacing the Power Supply.
(Especially with it's age, if it is still the same one)

ONE thing though..............
Watch the 20-pin ATX main power cable connector, and the wires in it. Be sure they are in the standard place setup.

Check the pinout, and color code of the wires,

1) Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer, 20-pin ATX main power cable connector pinout,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/techov.htm#1105612

2) STANDARD 20-pin ATX main cable connector pinout, and color code of wires; as set by JEDEC,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain20

[Be aware that the ATX main power cable, and connector, you get with a new power supply; such as the above, will have a 20 =4-pin ATX main power cable connector,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain20plus4

Use the 20-pin connector, tie the 4-pin power cable up out of the way]

For a time period Dell was making the motherboard's main power cable connector - Proprietary.
Meaning they has that motherboard connector wire pinout changed.
Colors of wires were in a different place, than the standard setup by JEDEC.

Orange wires are 3.3 Volts (DC)
Red wires are 5 Volts (DC)
Yellow wires are 12 Volts (DC)
Black wires are Ground wires.

Guess what happens if a 12 Volt Yellow wire, is plugged into where a Black Ground wire is supposed to be?

ZZZZZZzzzzt! Motherboard fries, processor fries, ram memory fries, and graphics card. (If used)

Check the color code of the wires, in the 20-pin ATX main power cable's CONNECTOR, for the Dimension 2400's power supply.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Will this graphics card work with my Dell Dimension 2400? http://www.amazon.com/nVIDIA-GeFORCE-FX5500-256MB-Graphics/dp/B0042A9M5S/ref=pd_cp_e_3

Yes, that should work fine. That card uses the PCI interface, which there are 3 slots for on the Dell Dimension 2400.

I have an old dell dimension 2400 and I am trying to install an nvidia geforce fx 5500 pci card and I keep getting a blue screen when windows gets to the desktop.

If the blue screen appears only if the video card is plugged in that only means it's not compatible with your computer. If you want to know what video cards you can use for that computer try to go to this link.

Good luck !

Where is the serial number for my computer?

Use the Service Tag number, or the Express Service Code, (ESC), which is on the white Service Tag, on the back of the computer tower.

You may also have a Service Tag label on the top of the computer, or up on the side of the tower.

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&dl=false&l=en&s=gen&docid=DAD1AFE6F90145549F7AA300E6671E47&doclang=en&cs=#3

Copy and paste the above into your address bar, then press the Enter key.

By the way. The Maximum Amount of ram memory for EACH ram slot is 1GB, not 512MB, as Dell states.

TOTAL Maximum Amount of ram memory for the Dimension 2400 is 2GB.
(1GB in EACH ram slot. There are 2 ram slots)

Ram memory used is DDR at 333MHz, or also can be stated as PC2700.

The best Processor you can use is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.06GHz, with HT. (Hyperthreading Technology)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Northwood_.28130.C2.A0nm.29

The best graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 6200 O.C. (Overclocked edition), that has dual monitor ports. (256MB of graphics ram)

Yes, I know the processor, and graphics card are real old news, but so is the computer.

Anything I can help with?

No video

HI,
You can go into the BIOS , under onboard devices. Change the primary video controller to PCI.
refer to the following screen
http://supportapj.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/sm/syssetup.htm#wp1052347

If the cards are not detected on the board. Then the problem could be of the PCIe slot .

Upgrade card

Well, these are the minimum specs for Age of Conan:

OS: Windows Vista/XP
Processor: 3GHz Pentium IV
RAM: 1GB RAM
Video Card: Shader Model 2.0 and 128MB RAM: NVIDIA GeForce 5800 or ATI 9800

These are the specs of your computer (base):

  • Intel Pentium 4 550 (3.4GHz) Processor
  • 1GB PC2-4300 DDR2 Memory
  • Two 74GB WD SerialATA Hard Drives in RAID0 Drive Array
  • 16x DVD+/-R and 48x CD-RW Burner Optical Drives
  • Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Audio
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Graphics Card with 256MB
Seems to me that you are okay. Would a faster computer be better? Of course. But as you are, the game should play alright. Upgrading to an 8 series Nvidia is worth the change, though.

Is my Motherboard compatible?

Try to find out what the AGP voltage is on the motherboard.
Some graphics cards use 1.5 volts and some use 3.
If it's a 1.5 volt AGP slot and you plug a 3 volt graphics card in, it either wont work or you could permanantly damage both card and motherboard.
