Was hesitating at idle speed but would run ok once traveling faster. Now it wont idle at all

The fault could be in the ingnition module in the dist.I had a car one time that did the same thing but when it was cold, try replacing the the ignition module.

Have you changed the fuel pump yet?I had the same exact problem.I replaced my fuel pump with an AUTOZONE PIECE OF JUNK fuel pump. That pump lasted almost 2 days. The second day i had it the truck didnt want to start but it did and it ran like ****,and when i put it in gear it ran as long as I didnt touch that gas pedal. You could go get a fuel pressure test or just replace it,your call. You might want to check your filter too but im sure its the pump.Good luck

Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and check to see if the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad. Give the throttle body a good cleaning and the injectors too. Do not use carb cleaner, it's to corrosive for the gaskets used in the throttle body. The other thing too that would cause this is a stuck or bad EGR valve, Try cleaning the EGR valve too since your cleaning the throttle body. Good luck and keep me posted.

check for minor vacuum leak and map sensor, pcv, egr valve

Change the ignition module. It is located behind the distributor cap; you will have to remove the cap to change it so be sure to mark your spark plug wire locations.
Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
