I admit to knowing nothing. I am not smarter than a 5th grader, and, unfortunately I have no 5th graders around to ask. How do I use my notebook wireless? I have gone to hot spots and my Acer asks for passwords or codes or something. When I'm just roaming around I dont't know the codes for every Micky D's or motels I park in front of. Do I need to buy something to plug in to my laptop? Thanks, Cheryl
Cheryl, Most access points are restricted to authorized users; very few are intentionally left open for just anyone to connect to. The few that are open generally don?t require any changes on your PC as long as it is configured to automatically obtain and IP and DNS server. You simply turn on your PC and let it automatically search and connect. Usually when you open your browser the first page you see is a form requiring you to electronically agree you won?t break any laws or do evil stuff. When you are prompted for something (depending on what it?s asking for) you are probably trying to connect to an access point that is restricted. Generally places like motels or other hot spots want you to spend money with them first. Then they give you the password or connection information you need to connect. As far as connecting to an access point that is accidentally left open, to me its like keeping something you found that doesn?t belong to you. Even if you can get away with it, it?s not quite right. For those who aren?t motivated by doing what?s right at least one person in California has been arrested under the same law that prevents illegally tapping into someone else?s cable access. Hope that answers your questions, if not let us know; otherwise please don?t forget to rate this post.
Your friend was probably picking up signals from home users who incorrectly configured their home wireless networks. No codes required, just scan for an open access port and connect?.
If you go to a Starbucks or other business with a hotspot just ask them for connection details. They generally have a hand out that walks you through their connection procedure.
The default wireless laptop card is configured to automatically detect and usually connect to any access point within range.
Verify the configuration of your wireless card:
- In XP click on Start, settings, control panel, find and double click on the icon labeled Network connections.
- In the Network connections box that appears you should see an object titled Wireless Network Connection, left click on that and select the properties option from the box that appears.
- In the center of the next box that appears you will see a white box with several objects in it. Scroll down to the bottom of the listed items, find and right click once on *Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the properties button below and to the right.
-In the Internet Protocol box that appears you should see two items *Obtain an IP address automatically* and Obtain DNS server address automatically*. Both of them should be selected, if not do so by clicking on the selector button to the left of each.
- Click on the OK button on this and the other previous box.
How to connect to an open access point:
- In XP click on Start, settings, control panel, find and double click on the icon labeled Network connections.
- In the Network connections box that appears you should see an object titled Wireless Network Connection, double left click on that.
- In the Wireless Network Connection box that appears click on the Refresh network button in the upper left hand corner.
- Once it displays the access points it can see left click once on the access point you want to connect to.
- Once it is highlighted click on the Connect button in the lower right hand corner of the Wireless Network Connection box. If you get a pop-up warning about connecting to an unsecured network click on Connect Anyway but remember with any kind of wireless connection (even secured) your transmissions could be intercepted. You don?t want to conduct on-line banking or any other type of business that is dealing with sensitive data.
- Once you click clicked on the button your laptop will attempt to connect:
-if successful it will show connected.
-If not you will get an error message.

Does the Acer come automatically configured to obtain IP and DNS? If not, what do I have to do to congfigure it?
Thanks for the help. I was riding in a car cross state with some aquaintences, one of which was using his computer the whole time. He had an external device in a usb hub. He was on line practically the whole time. He'd lose a signal then pretty soon he'd pick up another one. I certainly don't want to steal a signal, but don't places like McDonalds and Starbucks that have signs in the windows proclaiming themselves as having wireless available. Okay if I go in and have coffe there will they give me some sort of access number? Why did this acquaintence not have to have codes when we were driving? Gollygee, thanks again, Cheryl
Thanks a bunch everyone. I was successful in getting connected today! Yeah!!!
