When you start the Computer
Press "F8" key repeatedly after the IBM logo appears, but before the operating system logo appears.

then when menu appears press Down key and Select Safe Mode & Press Enter

If the "F8" key doesn't work, restart the computer and try pressing the "F11" key repeatedly.

You can boot in safe mode and open "MSCONFIG" via the RUN option on the start menu. If it not on the start menu look all programs> accessories> run. in the RUN Box Type msconfig and enter. That will open System Configuration, you will see options under General, you want the TOP one NORMAL startup, next click on BOOT tab and look for the Safe boot option,MAKE SURE IT IS NOT CHECKED. llet me know what happens or you need further assistance. max

Please explain safe mode to me.

Safe mode is a mode in which Windows can be run without using drivers, or other startup items. It is designed as a diagnostic tool to help restore windows problems. In certain situations, such as a registry problem, Windows may fail to start in normal mode, but will allow you to run windows in safe mode. Safe mode can be accessed by pressing F8 during startup.

I hope this heps.

How do I get into safe mode on HP mini 1000? XP OS

To get into safe mode on any computer running Windows you press F8 before or right after the Windows splash screen comes up. You will have three options for safe mode:

Safe Mode: Only the absolutely necessary drivers load.

Safe Mode with Networking: Same as above plus the ability to use the internet/network access

Safe Mode with Command Prompt: Boots into safe mode with a Command Prompt for command line work.

Hope this helps.

Start up

try starting the computer normally, this usually happens if you computers power was cut while booting up, its just a small harmless glitch.  As for the returning back to the prompt try running it with command prompt. when you get to the command prompt, type (chkdsk) and let it run this might also fix any other problems that you are not seeing.
