Since the rice did not work, and I heard noises like loose screws, I decided to open it up to check. I found the screws loose and a flat plate that should sit somewhere free. Three screws I beleive were missing. I put 2 back since those were obvious, the third has to do with the flat rectangular metal plate. I done seem to know if it touches the bottom or not
Any chance you could post a photo? Often these machines have a deflector that reduces the heat applied to the middle of the pan - it sounds as if that is the item you are talking about - there may have been a small ceramic ring or block that the screw went through which would put it a little above the element or a little below the pan base. look in the floor beneath the element for screw holes.
