Microwave dead even though power works

Hi, Did you check the fuses on the stove. If it was built before and after model year 2000 there still should be fuses. If your stove is still under warrenty you may be able to get it fixxed for free. Good luck.

there could be many reasons for your microwave to be dead. First did you check if it has power coming to it? Is the plug out of the socket? Sometimes the power plug is behind the microwave and it is hard to see unless you slide it out and look. When you say dead, is the display light up? If so does it indicate PF (Power Failure)

Sometimes the internal fuse blows out because of a short, usually caused by the diodes being shorted or even the transformer or the magnatron tube itself. If you have any of these problems except for the fuse then I would recommend that you replace the microwave with a new one because yours probably wouldn't pay to fix.

Look for a fuse that looks like an automotive fuse, the glass tube type, accept the microwave one looks gray or brown instead of clear glass.

Carefully, without touching anything, pull the fuse out and check with multimeter to see if it's good. or Just replace it with another fuse rated at 120 volts. Put the cover back on, put screws in, plug it in and Hopefully you are done.

You can also check the plug to see if the wire are not loose from it.

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

It may be the fuse, which is usually located behind the grille, on the floor of the oven behind the control panel, between the door switches or on a small filter board in the back where the power cord comes in.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron, or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed or virtually zero ohms.

Also, the hood thermostat usually has thinner wires that are not black or white, like the other thermostats' wires.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

Look inside for a blown fuse ...

My PVM2070 Spacemaker Microwave quit working & its DEAD. I checked circuit braker, unplugged unit, checked power is ok, open/shut door, pushed very sensor buttons; its DEAD. Help??

sounds like a short in unit and if it is then must be taken apart to observe operation and failure spot. depending on the age GE has warranties that cover magnatron up to five years< most likely cause of problem> suggest calling company before procieding any further.

Inside unit is a cylinder fuse which can blow for a number of reasons. External cover needs to be removed to access. If you are confident in doing this and can find & check the fuse then it would be my first guess. If fuse is OK then you will need to have repaired. If fuse isblown & you replace then it blows again,you will need to have repaired. regards
