Engine starts, but won't stay started unless I step on the gas.

Hi, I own a 1996 I-4 2WD 4 door. It has 201084 miles. My mechanic told me I need to change my timing belt soon. Need a new water pump, as well as a couple other things. I haven't taken this problem to my mechanic yet, because the last time I was about to go, when the problem first showed, the car started perfectly. Today, about 2 weeks later, it took a couple tries to get the engine started. Oh, it is winter here in Chicago.

Is it a battery issue? My battery is now at least 5-7 years old, from memory.
Is it my timing belt?
Is it just the cold weather? I never had this problem before.

Any help with this matter will be much appreciated. I don't have time to go to the mechanic for at least another couple weeks.

It sounds like to me your mechanic recommened you change your timing belt and water pump due to a maintance issue. If vehicle still runs good with old timing belt new belt wont change running. Cold weather and low cranking amps (poor battery) will cause starting problems.

BMW X5 fuel gauge doesnt register gas in tank

Very expensive. Try all of the above. If they all fail then last resort is a complete system reset. Disconnect battery for 8 hrs. Reconnect and start car. Do not lock doors or else leave a window open when you do this. Car will not unlock or allow you to open any hood liftgate etc without battery.

98 Isuzu rodeo, engine cranks and trys to start but it won't

If this is a diesel engine you probably have an air lock in the fuel system. It will need "bleeding" before it will start. If you have already tried bleeding the fuel system there may be an air lock in the injectors. If it still doesn't start I suggest you carry out a compression check because diesel engines need to be in good condition to start easily, especially in cold weather If it is a petrol engine, there could be problems with engine timing or ignition problems.

99 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L Car will start but won't stay running unless you keep giving it gas

I had the same problem. My car sat for a few days and when i went to start it i heard an extremely loud pop (kind of like a backfire). After that it would start and sound fine, but die 2 seconds later. Thank god my bf is a mechanic he knew instantly that the pcv valve hose that connects to the intake manifold unplugged itself. He plugged it back in and it runs fine now. I didnt however get a check engine light, but i only tried to start it twice before he fixed it because i was scared it jumped time.

I have the same issue with my 2003 Sante Fe. After I fill up, (whether it's 1/2 a tank or 1/4), my car will stall unless I pump the gas for about 60 sec. My Sante Fe has around 104,000 miles- it also only gets 13 miles to the gallon. I also had an issue with the check engine light. I had 4 different garages check it and all 4 told me they didn't know why it was on (has beem on since 2005). I recently replaced the battery and it went off. Ever since I've had the problem filling up.

Car is hard to start. Keeps shutting off when idling and when I decelerate. Could this just be the fuel filter I hope?

I am not a mechanic but I own a 2002 Mazda Tribute and have replaced the idle control valve 2x. pretty soon it will not stay started unless you have your foot on the gas....sounds like you are there. It costs between $200-$400. They told me at the dealer that Tributes have this problem and it happens a lot. I have had it happen two times in 60,000 miles I put on it (it's now at 86,000). Other than that GREAT vehicle!

If I have less than 1/4 tank of gas my yukon won't start.

I had the same problem. I had a few different mechanics tell me that the fuel pump is starting to go out when it does that. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, and the gasoline keeps the pump cool and lubricated. When the fuel tank is less than a 1/4 full, the pump is not submerged anymore, and can have trouble sending gas to the engine. My emergency fix was to get underneath the car on the driver's side and bang on the gas tank about three times. It will start up, and will run great unless you turn your engine off. But eventually you're going to need a new fuel pump. Once I replaced it, the problem went away.

First make sure that your wires to you iac(idle air control) motor are ok. Also that the pins in the connectors are not damaged. Most likeley you need to replace the iac motor and follow a relearn procedure for the pcm.(powertrain control module)
The iac is most likely stuck in the extented position causing it to starve for air. You have to hold your foot on the gas to keep the throttle plate open enough to let air by for the engine to run.
