Jura Capresso Impressa z5---We keep getting a "Tray Empty" message on our machine. We can remove the tray, put it back in, get "Coffee Ready" and then when we put a cup under the nozzle, we get a "Tray Empty" message again. Is there a sensor somewhere that's goofy?
Same problem exactly. I have also unplugged the machine, run the rinse cycle a couple of times, etc. Tried cleaning the machine but I can never get past the "Grounds Empty" stage.Same problem exactly. I have a similar problem with machines in two different houses. My owners manuals do not state how to clean the contacts. Any ideas?I have a similar problem with machines in two different houses. My owners manuals do not state how to clean the contacts. Any ideas?

If the machine says TRAY MISSING it's the contacts at the back so clean as other people have stated, you can also use a cardboard nail file to clean the contacts at the back if there really skanky!.
If the machine keeps saying EMPTY GROUNDS even though you have, pull out the tray, look just inside the aparture where the tray goes top right at the front there is a small slot where if you look closely you can see a small white micro switch. This will be probably gunged up with coffee and the switch will be stuck up, get a can of WD40 and squirt a small amount up into the switch then poke the switch with a small screwdriver up and down until it moves smoothly.
Then replace all the bits, sit down, look smug and have a coffee cos you've fixed it!! :0)
I had the same problem. I tried cleaning the contacts with a nail file to no effect. However, when I pried the 'female' contacts up with a file so as to create a more positive contact with the contacts of the tray, the problem was resolved.I had the same problem. What i do it put paper towel on the metal contacts, put the tray back in to the machine with the paper towel on it and then pull it back out. The paper towel will clean the slot inside the machine.
This last suggestion worked! I cut a piece of towel about 1/2” wide and taped it in place over the “male tab. I then inserted the tray and the towel came out really dirty on top, meaning it cleaned a lot of gunk off the e female contact. It then worked again. Thanks! This last suggestion worked! According to the Instruction Manual section 21 page 68 when this happens it is because there is a "solied metal contact at rear of drip tray" and you need to clean the metal contacts.
Oilerfan's paper towel trick worked fine for me.
WARNING : use only one layer thick. If you use two layers or more, the tray may become stuck by the metal contacts. You will need to use much more force than wise or safe.

finally found it - look inside the large opening where the entire tray part fits - all the way up front - just inside the opening, not in the back where the contacts fit, but way in front - there resides the white micro switch - loosen it up and voila! It works (after 4 hours of hunting, scraping, filing etc - it works like a charm - photo attached, I hope. Thank you RB5193!
On my machine - J6 Capresso, the problem was caused by a crack on one side of the grounds scraper, a plastic paddle attached to the side of the brew group. The scraper is supposed to detect when the tray is full by not returning to the normal position and triggering a sensor that detects that the tray was emptied. When one side was cracked, the scraper was too weak to trigger the sensor. I replaced the scraper ($20 part), and that fixed the problem.
Check the two contacts at the back of the tray. Be sure they are cleans as well as the plastic space between them. Then using compressed air clean where the contacts enter the machine in the rear. Usually there is moisture back there and the machine assumes the tray is full of water.
I had the same problem and had success with cleaning the contacts in the back of the machine with a small nail file/emery board. I found that the contacts that are inside the machine had a little calisification on them. Once they were cleaned up no problem.
Make sure your water tank to fill, when you start the clean process, and the tray is empty and wiped down. Then add a 500ml container under the spout rather than let the water go into the tray.
Also if you have not serviced the machine for about 5,000 cups this can occur.
