Amature installer problem

After putting a known good tape in the deck, push play, if the tape doesn't move, try rewind and FF. If nothing happens, the deck has a problem. I assume this is a cassette deck. If so, I always try the thrift stores for a new(used) one. There are good bargains there.

there are block heaters that are sold aftermarket that go into the engine in place of the dipstick. easy to install. just remove and save old dipstick and insert block heater, route the wiring carefully and hang the male end out the grill for connecting to 120volt household current

the capstan drive can eat any tape, for sure old taps and 2x that

if the tape is not wound around the capstan, then its not munched.

a better solution is a new head.
with USB port.
rip the tapes to MP3 (on any PC for free)
then copy them to USB stick (files)
end life of bad tape H3LL.

I am sure there is one available or suitable sub . I wonder if technics would provide more information if you contacted them or a local electronics store.
A microcontroller may or may not be programmed for a specific purpose so, that also may be an issue if not purchesd froma source used for that device.

They sell a kit to install the radio where the tape player is located. To access the wiring you will need to remove your gauge cluster surround and remove the radio.

If the hum is audible without monitoring a tape playback it has nothing to do with the oxide formulation or any aspect of the media.

Determine the conditions present whenever the hum is present:

Player just turned ON?
Tape deck Playing or Paused?
Tape deck Recording or Paused?
"Tape" selected at the receiver?
Any source selected?

What switch are you referring to? You could have a floating ground or shield through a Tape Monitor or other control. Audio cables between the Deck and the receiver could be faulty or require reseating with a twisting motiuon to remove oxide build-up.

Hum can enter any unshielded cable running near any motor, magnetic field or some light sources. Sometimes simply reversing the polarity of an AC power cord will cure it.

Of course it can be done.

The preamp has two tape loops plus a processor loop (essentially 3 tape loops). You can discount the tuner for this discussion as it already has a dedicated port.

Here's what I would do (and have done *). Get yourself a dbx 400 or dbx 400x Program Route Selector and simplify all of your current and future analog hookup options.

(* I, too, have a CD recorder and a tape deck plus some different dbx units (4bx, 110x-ds; 224) and other toys.)

It takes up ONE tape loop and allows attachment of 3 processors and 3 tape decks PLUS a dbx-style noise reduction system if you have one; and can logically rearrange the processors to be in line with any source and BEFORE, AFTER or BETWEEN tape decks with or without the Noise Reduction Processor involved, all via front panel illuminated buttons.

If you don't want to go the 400x way your options are severely limited re: the tape deck because even though the dbx processors can fit in nicely on the preamp, I don't think the preamp can place them in front of AND after the tape decks, depending on your desires for pre- or post-processing.

FIRST TRY FAST FORWARD AND THEN REWIND. Allow it to ff and rew right to the end of the tape. on the tape. do this a couple of times. this may cure it as it sounds like the tapes are getting an imbalanced tension. If you still haver the problem, dip a cotton bud in alcohol and clean (carefully) the pinch wheel (the rubber bit that drives the tape through) and the capstan (the metal bit the rubber wheel presses against).

I had the same problem, but the reason for it seemed to be that the USB cable from the cassette deck wasn't plugged directly into my computer, but via a hub. When I plugged the cable directly into my computer (PC, using Windows XP), the problem disappeared, or seems to have disappeared so far.

Unit may have worn belts that are slipping. All cassette player belts are subject to deterioration even if recently installed. You may try ordering the belts yourself and have a service tech install them. The tech that installed belts 9 months ago may have used used belts. Although dishonest, it is common.
