Bose 901 VI Main / Stereo Speaker Questions & Answers
Bose 901 series 6 equlaizer problem
Only a careful experiment with steadily increasing volume would reveal the answer. Or measure the resistance of your cobbled work to see if it sufficiently high to avoid amplifier stress.
Original Bose 901 drivers in many series' are available on eBay and other places. I would NOT mix drivers within an enclosure. They should all match in every respect. Bose typically uses some very low impedance that totals to 8-ohms as wired inside.
There are many 'golden ears' who have used 901's without the Active EQ at all or improperly configured and they have been happy with the sound. Sonic beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
I would NOT forgo the EQ.
Connecting Bose 901 series iv to Harman Kardon AVR 254
Most HK av receivers have pre amp out, power amp in with metal jumpers connecting them for the main or front channels. that would be the best place to hook up the EQ on a AV receiver. If your receiver doesn't have pre out, power in jacks , you can use tape monitor .record out playback in. The tape monitor option is best for stereo use , as the active EQ will charge all speakers in tape mode, possibly damaging other speakers.I run my 901 s with a seperate pre-amp,power-amp hooked up to my Denon AV receiver that way i can run in surround w/standard speakers
Adding Subs to a Bose 901 system
You would need to use a modern equalizer like the EQ901 PS which has a built in crossover and four outputs. This would be connected in the pre-out / main-in loop of your Marantz 2285B.
Bose 901 speakers the wiring inside
- Bose 901 Series I and II speakers have 8 Ohm impedance each.
- A row of 3 speakers in series gives you 24 Ohm.
- 3 parallel rows gives you finally 8 Ohm.

(1) (3) (5) (7)
(2) (4) (6) (8)
Rear speaker is number (9)

Row 3: -(8)+ -(6)+ -(4)+

Here are three options to connect your EQ901B or a BOSE 901® Equalizer to a typical Audio Video Receiver (AVR). See:

Option 1: Adding a Separate Power Amplifier - Best Option
This option requires that you add a separate power amplifier.
1) Connect the pre-out main left and right to the EQ901 inputs 1 and 2, and the EQ901 outputs 1 and 2 to the power amplifier inputs left and right
2) Connect your 901 speaker to the power amplifier outputs
3) The equalized signal will now play through the front left and right speaker outputs in the stereo and home theater modes.
Option 2: Setting up Your EQ901 B Using Zone 2 Loop
1) Connect Zone 2 pre-out to the EQ901 input
2) Connect the EQ901 output to any unused analog input
3) Select the Zone 2 source as any input (i.e. CD player)
4) Select the Zone 1 source to the input selected in step 2
The equalized signal will now play through the front speaker outputs in Stereo Mode Zone 1.
Option 3: Setting up the EQ901 B Using Only a Single Source
1) Use this option if you have only one source. This example uses a CD player
2) Connect the EQ901 B in between the CD player and any AVR input
3) This may require the 2V input mode on the EQ901B
The equalized signal will play only the single source (i.e. CD) when the input referenced in line 2 is chosen
Can I hookup a Bose 901 EQ to my receiver and amp?
Your instincts are correct. In fact, the only way the 901's can live in an A/V system is with dedicated amplification.
Put that old amp back to work.
This is exactly how mine are connected.
For connection I would run a pair of RCA cables from the Front L&R Audio Line OUT to the Active EQ's Line IN; then the EQ's Line OUT to a separate amp's Line IN. Attach the 901's to the new amp, run through the receiver's setup procedures for volume, etc and you're done.
How can i hook up my 30gb Ipod to my Bose 901
There has to be some amplification in here somewhere. Any single amplifier will not work correctly with the Active EQ for 901's applied to non-901 speakers.
Any MP3-player device with at least a headphone output can feed any standard audio device that has a Line Level input (other than "PHONO") once the output is adapted to fit the input.
Best amps for bose 901
You need an amplifier with at least 200 wpc to get the most out of your BOSE. Look into getting a NAD, ADCOM or CARVER amplifier. I prefer CARVER myself. I am running a CARVER M-500T(251 wpc) on my 901's and they sound incredible.
What kind of amplifier and
I would recommend a high power 2-channel amplifier, minimum 16 guage speaker wire, and of course the Bose 901 active EQ that matches the series of your speakers. I use a Yamaha mx-830 power amp & cx-830 pre amp 170 wpc They (Bose) claim that they're unlimited power handling, But if you use a amplifier with to little power and overdrive it to make it louder, you could damage the speakers or amp. With my 170 watt class A amp,the 901 series 6 will blow wind across the room. Go with the best amp you can afford! best for money- Yamaha,Denon,Onkyo!
What would be the correct placement of the Bose 901 series VI?
This fully depends on the room.
If it is a simple square room, set the front speakers left and right about 2 meters from your TV, try to do the same at the back.
Point them slightly into your direction and try if this sounds good for you. If not you could try to turn them.
