One possibility would be to remove the battery and AC adapter and then just hold down the power button for about 5 seconds.
Put the battery and AC adapter back in and givr it a try.

Sounds like a memory issue for sure! but I also know that when you put a laptop into hibernation mode it uses about 400MB space for special quick start up access. I think that you may want to try to repair your installation of Windows, you would havw to put your restore disk in and instead of re-installing the OS just repair it...

Somethings has happened to your motherboard, CPU and/or hard drive somewhere along the line if it wont power up when you hit the power button and this would explain the reason for no activity. When a motherboard fails, no activity will happen at all, so Im putting my money on your motherboard being defect so take it in for a service and you may have to buy a new laptop since repairs can be costly.

If you go to control panel + power settings you can configure and adjust how your power gets distributed when in sleep mode etc. This may not totally fix your issue as it will alleviate the loss of power. I would first see what type of life the battery is supposed to have and if you are not satisfied your best bet is to replace the battery with a longer life.
