At first I thought there was something wrong with my earphones, so I bought new ones. Then I realized that it was my mp3 player that was the problem when it continued to happen. I would only hear sound coming from one side, then when I held down the end of the earphones into the port I could hear from both sides. But it is not practical to always hold it down. Since I usually have my pocket Dj clipped to my shorts when I'm exercising, when I move into certain positions I can hear all the sound or the sound switches to the other ear. It is frustrating! I've even noticed that you don't hear all the background instruments and stuff when you can only hear out of one side. It's like the monostereo or whatever they used to have in the old days. I already read one entry that told of a problem similar to mine. Is the only solution to bring it to a local repair shop. Which part exactly could I tell them is broken? Is somewhere like Radio Shack or Best Buy capable of fixing something like this? If not, what kind of repair shop is? I'd appreciate any imput.
Perhaps you can open the player and solder the head socket it may have some dry joints there.
I opened up my mp3 player (2 screws on bottom), slid the computer board out of the case by pushing up towards the top, to find 2 of the 5 soldered earphone connections had come undone (thats why the earphones would work in stereo when you hold the earphone connector pushed to one side). Used my pencil solder iron & resoldered them unsing fresh solder. don't just resolder using no soldering wire, I tried that and they came unconnected again. there were 5 solder points to the earphone connector so check them all. saved a lot of money not buying another mp3 player! easy fix! no more getting irritated when working out!

I have tried 3 sets of earphone/buds. 2 give me one ear. 1 gives me both ears. Perhaps try different ones. I have suspected for some time that the plugs on the ends of some devices are just a tiny bit bigger or smaller than others. I expect if this is true it would appear to be a loose connection or wire.

i have the same problem. sansa something. it's so frustrating i can't just hold the port forever. i exercise too. ughh.
ditto. What's wrong is the souldered connection at the headphone jack is faulty. It needs to be resouldered. A lot better than an technical glitch I'd say. A pro would would do this easily. I wouldn'T try it myself because I might leave a big "goop" of soulder somewhere and blow the whole unit. I am trying to find a repair service to fix it.
hiya i have the same problem, have to hold the connection for it to work, i went to apple shop, they said costs 110 pounds. must be somewhere cheaper.

it's really bad how there will be a new pair of headphones and then it will only play in the right ear. but the MP3's not that old and if you push it in all the way it will continue playing.
should probably try Best Buy or RadioShack to get an estimate, or buy a new one.
