2002 chevy malibu heats up when running at low speeds

When driving around town at low speeds or the car is stopped at a red light it will start heating up, but once I get on the freeway it cools down back to normal.

I have same problem with you. I notice the electrical fans (two fans) is always in slow speed even the temperature in dash gauge already reach 80 degree Celcius. Then I use OBDII ELM327 to know the upper limits temperature to know when electrical fans working. Surprised me ! I run the car on the way and It works about 110 degree Celcius and at this moment the car already hesitate to run. I am not turn on the Air Conditioning at this test. Ussually, I turn on Air Conditioning to make two electrical fans working and in the morning & hot season from home to office (about 40km) the temperature can reach 80 degree. But in the afternoon it reach 105 degree back to home and car loose the power along the way back home. I add NO thermostat 50 degree which will ground Relay 14 to make right electrical fans working. Alhamdulilah now the max. temperature is only 80 degree in afternoon back to my home. Even I have P0481 fault in the car, I prefer to do this rather than loose car power and high temp in the engine. I want to re-setting ECM but don't know how to this. Any comment ?

CHECK THE THERMOSTAT. THERMOSTAT IS THE ONE THAT SENSE THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE AND TURNS ON COOLING FAN WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT.

Cheak your fuse under the drivers side under the hood. Look in your manuel for fuel fuse. It looks like a little black box.

SOURCE: My 2002 Chevy Malibu is overheating. I found that

If your car is equipped with a 3.1 or a 3.4 litre V6 and you have preformed all of the above listed work then I would have to say its the intake manifold gaskets. They commonly blow on these motors. Just a design flaw, nothing but replacing them when they leak can fix this. Also run a coolant pressure test on the system to check for minor things like a leak that you cant see from visual inspection. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: change headlamp bulb 2000 chevy malibu

The headlight is a Halogen that comes out the back.
Find the wire harness and follow it to the back of the light to a rubber cover. Pull the rubber cover off the back and find a holder. Unscrew or releade the wire "spring" then pull out the old bulb.
BR SURE NOT to touch the glass part of the new bulb.....

2002 Malibu stalls while driving, doesn't over heat. But can start smelling gas fumes before it stalls. usually wait about 5 mins then restarts. in higher elevation runs fine but in lower elevatio

It sounds like the catalytic converter could possibly be almost completely plugged up not allowing the exhaust to leave the engine like it should. It just builds up in the cylinder head and when it gets too much in it built up and there's no where to go, it'll stall the engine. By letting it sit for a few minutes, it gives the exhaust time to find a way out and the car will restart.

You may have an Air Idle Solenoid and or Idle Speed Motor. Not familiar with you vehicle. Check that out.

My car slams when put into drive. is it the idle

Yes, sounds like the idle speed is too high. If you keep driving like that, you will fry the torque converter / turbine. Since idle is computer controlled, you will have to take it for service tune up. There is one possibility that the rich, high rpm idle used for cold start is not disengaging properly after the engine warms up. Air conditioning will raise the idle speed by a couple hundred rpm, so avoid using it until you have the problem fixed. BTW.....warm engine rpm in idle, and neutral should be around 700-800. Anything over 900-1100 will result in a hard shift into 1st gear and dragging at stop lights.
