I cannot read or write to -R (16x) DVD's. The system gives an error that relates the "disc is unknown format". I am using Windows XP Home edition. all other DVD types are working fine (+R 8x, 16x, -R 8x).

I have window xp my dvd burner worked fine before now it doesnt

What do you mean "it just stays there"? Can you be a bit more specific? The writing speed doesn't really mean anything apart from being able to burn quicker.

The "drivers" for the sony dru 710a can be downloaded from here:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/112#drivers

I would also update the Firmware version too.

Hope that works

Sony DRU 710 not writing DVDs or CDs

as with all writers eventually they fault at the lens and it gets out of line and cannot read discs, you can try the usual thing of checking Sony for any firmware updates, but first:- Go to my computer>right click>hardware tab>device manager, then down list to cd/dvd drives and click '+' sign and highlight your writer, right click on it and select uninstall. Restart PC and it will be automatically re installed, try again and if no change you will need to replace the drive as they are cheaper nowadays

Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
