Hi The agitator -- the finned part that fits on the tub shaft -- can also tear laundry if the fins are cracked or broken. You may be able to solve the problem temporarily by pinching off the splinters with pliers and lightly filing the plastic smooth, but this is just a stopgap measure; the agitator should be replaced. Replace a damaged agitator with a new one of the same type. To do this, unscrew the cap on top of the agitator. With the cap off, pull straight up on the agitator; it should lift off. If it doesn't move, rap its side with a hammer. If it still won't lift off, drive wedges under the bottom rim of the agitator to dislodge it. Then set the new agitator into place and replace the agitator cap.

Hello, This has happened to me several times and I have actually hurt my neck trying to dislodge the agitator. If you are lucky in removing it and removing the item, then from now on keep the wash cycle on gentle as this is the only way to keep your machine from getting your clothes stuck again. Also any loose strings should be tied and double tied to prevent them from getting caught. I have had this maching for about 25 years and it has served me well. I have had it serviced about three times over the past ten years, but this problem with the agitator has occurred approximately six times in the last two years. I probably have to look for another machine soon.

How do I get a mattress cover stuck under agitator out?

On the older machines, the cap on top of the agitator unscrewed & then the agitator could then be raised.

Laundry is trapped under the base of the agitator.

Im not very familiar with that type of top loadign washer,,, but on most agitators there is a bolt that runs down the center of the agitator, connecting it to the transmission/gearbox. Usually there is a cap, or softner dispenser that can be pulled off, revealing this bolt.

GE washer won't agitate

I had this same problem with our GE top load washer.  I just needed to pull harder.  (Note: The agitator is held in place by about a dozen L-shaped clips in a ring around the agitator's base that will release more as you pull harder on the agitator.)  Everything from the base below the large fins on up comes out together.  Grab the shaft above the fins and pull slowly and hard. I had to take the entire tub out, lay it on the porch, put my feet inside of it, and pull the agitator assembly out.  I wasn't able to pull it out while it was still in the washer.  BE CAREFUL! DON'T **** IT OUT; that might injure your back; just pull out slowly and as hard as you can without hurting yourself.  I was able to get it out successfully, but I am currently stuck at removing the bell below the agitator.  Good luck!

Can't get agitator off of GE spacemaker model WWP 1180G

There is a bolt, ok. Remove the bolt and lift the agitator by reaching underneath it with both hands on each side and pull it up. If it seems really stuck, apply some WD40 and let it soak a bit before trying to pull it again.

A sweatshirt cord is wrapped around my HotPoint top load washing machine. The machine is 18 years old. Can I pull off the agitator to retreive the string?

If it's wrapped around up underneath the agitator you can.

Have you tried just figuring out which way it was wrapped?

Keep a can of WD-40 handy.

Removing the Agitator on a G157 Hotpoint washing machine

Some models have a bolt towards the bottom of the outside of the agitator, depending on model. If it has one, take out out and you'll have to yank on it VERY hard to get of off (you'll most likely lift the machine off of the ground a few times in the process!)

If the bolt isn't there, its under the top cap of the agitator "somewhere". You'll still have to yank up on the silly thing to get it off after taking the bolt out.

Good luck!
