Sounds like a poor connection or loose wires.Could also be a poor ground. The head light connection may be poor where the bulb goes in. If the ground area is rusty that will give poor lighting as well.

Digital answer phones record the message on a memory chipset in the same way old tape machines did using a magnetic support. Quality can only be improved by the technology itself, problem is with your specific machine.
If you have a broadband filter try replacing it.
Test the machine on a different phone socket and see if it makes any difference.
Check on your answering machine settings, you should find an option to control volume.

Open up the cabinet and spray some LPS1 or contact cleaner on the volume control and the head phone jack- runt hem through their paces a few times to make sure the contact surfaces are clean.

This should remedy it.

So you have sound. but not in the headphones? A system reload would not have been able to alter the hardware. Be sure of the correct plug, you always get poor headphone performance when it is plugged in to the microphone jack.

get some q-tips, peroxide. power off and a cassette tape you been playing...open compartment door... poor a cap full of peroxide in cap.. take one q-tip dip in peroxide.. now take q-tip and wipe the recording head, erase head and play head (do not saturate) each tip should be black or dark brown now take another q-tip to dry the same heads and the roller... let the air hit it for about 5 min... power on insert tape press play ... how do it sound...

Remember seing something under one of the seats ,but in my old age it could have been a cd autochanger

it sounds like you have clogged the head if you leave it for 6 hours then the ink will dry inside the head then you have a big prob if i were you i would take it back to the shop and get a refund or a replacement one i have an epson dx4400 very good

Sounds like the ground connection (-ve) to the earphone socket is broken.

When you plug in the earphones, they ground through the control section on the board. Poor sound is another sympton of this problem.

If you have any soldering experience, dismantle the player, and re-solder the 4 connections to the headphone socket.
