You didn't state model #, but raise your feeder up and look for the "skinny" piece of glass on left side of your large glass and make sure you clean it well.

Horizontal line on printed page

When you use the flatbed the copy is perfect because the ccd sensor is under the glass cover and obviously is free form dust/ dirt.
On the other hand if you use the feeder the ccd sensor is located in between the roller assembly (not sure exactly for this model).
This means that the page is scanned by the ccd in the feeder, any dirt on the ccd will appear as a black line. I assume that you are feeding papers from the side and not from the top that is why you get a horizontal line.

A quick test to see if the ccd sensor is dirty is to feed the paper from the top side to the feeder. If you get a vertical line it is a proof that your ccd sensor needs to be cleaned.
The worst case is that the sensor in the feeder assembly has a tiny spot that is damaged and it is causing the black line.
So , first try the test, then open the feeder assembly, locate the ccd and clean it. Hope that this helps.

There is a vertical black line appearing when I scan or copy

To the left of the A4 scanner glass, there is a narrow glass strip. This is when the top document feeder scans from. Check for any contamination (even a small speck) on this glass at about the position of the vertical line.

Black line vertical while scan and photocopy a document

does it happen when you put it on the glass or only thru the document feeder? if only when you use the doc feeder then it is something on the slit glass the small piece of glass about an inch wide next to the big sheet of glass. some times ink from a pen od dirt gets baked on the slit glass. it can be hard to get off but if you look closly then you can see it and clean it off.

When I am photocopying and scanning documents I am noticing vertical lines on the print in the middle of the page which is ruining the copy, any ideas? Alos message intermittently coming up waste toner...

Most probably you are using the automating document feeder for the photocopy or scanning. If you can lift up the document feeder , there should be the mirror where you can put the original document for manual photocopy or scan. Clean the edges of the mirror with a printer cleaning liquid. There may be some foreign particle stuck there or it is just dirty from long use. Hope this helps.

Line in copies that go thru feeder

Hi,

Over time the automatic document feeder (ADF) will get dirty, occasionally causing vertical black streaks or lines in scans and copies .

Manual cleaning of the ADF might be necessary. Follow the procedure below to manually clean the ADF .

You will need the following materials:
  • Soft lint-free cloths
  • Glass cleaner
if you look carefully on the left side of ADF ( top feeder ) there is an assembly which u can lift , there wud be a set of rollers if u lift that part there would be a glass strip . u are suppose to clean that strip .
While holding up the inside of the ADF, clean the glass in the location of the vertical streak with one of the cotton swabs. Try cleaning the glass first with a dry cotton swab. If that does not correct the problem, then moisten the swab with glass cleaner .
If the vertical lines or streaks still appear, go through the above cleaning process again, this time cleaning the entire surface of the ADF scanner glass.
and after this try the following steps as well .
CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner. Avoid abrasives, acetone, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.

Black lines

There is a thin strip of glass that you will see when you lift the top feeder. There is most likely white-out on it.

When you use the top feeder, it doesn't use the large glass, it only 'rolls' the original document over this small strip of glass.

Print Problem - vertical lines

If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.
