I used to have the same problem. But the freezing can also happen when you try to turn it on. You may also eventually have problems while trying to copy files from your computer to the device. A little window appears saying the copy couldn't be accomplished because the devise just turn itself off. (?)

check the unit after completing each step:
Confirm that the portable player is connected to a working USB port and that it is charging. If necessary, connect it to a different port. When connected properly, the battery icon will be animated or it will indicate the charge status such as FULL when charging is completed. Make sure that you are pressing the POWER button to turn the player on. Previous Walkman® models that did not have a power button would turn on by pressing any button. This model must have the power button pressed to turn it on.
Ensure that the HOLD function is not activated.

NOTE: For some models, when you use the portable player for the first time, if you have not used it for a long time, or the battery is depleted, it may take up to 5 minutes for it to be recognized or start charging. On models with a display, the display will remain blank. If it the portable player is not recognized or does not begin to charge after waiting 5 minutes, continue with this procedure to reset the unit.
If the portable player is still not responding, reset it by pressing the RESET button with a small pin or similar object.

NOTE: When the RESET button is pressed, although the unit will retain the music data and clock settings, all other stored data and settings may be deleted. If the unit starts up after the reset, access the Settings menu and initialize the unit using the Format (initialize) function.
If there was no change after the player was reset, connect it to the computer and reset it again, leaving it connected.
Check the Sony Support Web site to see if there are any available firmware updates for your model. Updates can be found on the Sony Support Web Site.
If possible, instead of connecting the USB cable to the computer, connect it to a USB AC adapter (if available) and try to charge it.

2-you will find a firmware update ubder drivers and download
3-download the firmware and follow the instructions to update the firmware of your mp3 player
4-also read about the "Warning About Counterfeit Memory Stick® Media" because that could also have caused the problem.

there is a slide switch on the right hand side you need to slide it up one click or 2 depending on what you want.

one of the quickest way I know is to plug into computer and ope it like a storage device then just delete what you wish via the computer

if you have the initial executing files that were on your mp3 when you bye,

Format your Mp3 on PC by FAT32 format and copy those on your Mp3 player folder

You will never be able to download and add streamed music to your mp3 player. There are alot of songs that if you find out who they are you can go on you tube and grab the video off the youtube and convert it to mp3 so you can have the song. All you have to do is good youtube video to audio converter. It is safe 100 percent legal. Hope this helps. Try reflashing the firmware for your device you can find the latest firmware and flashing utilities from the manufacturer’s website. Make sure that you back your music up first because when you do this you are setting it back to factory settings.

Buggy firmware. Reset the player using the small button on the device

It's probably just a bug with Windows Media Player. Nothing is wrong with the player. Try using different software to synch the device or just copy and paste your songs onto the mp3 player. They should work as long as they're in MP3 format.

If you don't have them in MP3, then try searching online for a converter

Buggy firmware. Place a slim blunt object into the reset button on the back and turn on again. This happens regularly for me

Try resetting the settings on the player, the firmware may have written incorrectly. Also, check if you have a Lib-USB filter program, as it may be blocking your mp3 player. Either uninstall it or look up how to install your device when the filter is active
