You may try some recovery software to rescue the files on your recorder, here are some for your option.
Photo Video Music Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Video Music Recovery for Mac
Both programs can also recover video and music.
Note: Before your files are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the camcorder in case the original files(your recordings) are overwritten.
RE: JVC GZ-MG21U How can
A similar situation occurred on the gentleman (lady) who deleted his(her) hd movies on the sony hdr-sr5e here:http://www.fixya.com/support/t8266437-accidently_deleted_hd

Hello,
You may not have the proper CODEC installed on your PC for AVCHD videos. Try using
VideoLAN or
kmplayer to play the video. These multi-format players have most common CODEC's bundled. If you want to play the files with windows media player try installing a codec pack. You can google for that, but I recommend using one of the mentioned players instead as it is cleaner and they are fast.
If your PC does play the video but its really choppy, you might not have a fast enough processor / or video card to keep up with the high bandwidth high def video.
Regards,
Chris

Hour glass pops up and doesnt go away.
Sounds like a bunch of malware in your system. See if you can use your system in "safe mode" - F8 key when booting up. If you can, reboot back to normal startup and try a free malware program. Malwarebytes.org is currently one of the best.
Drivers
