You may not have the proper CODEC installed on your PC for AVCHD videos. Try using VideoLAN or kmplayer to play the video. These multi-format players have most common CODEC's bundled. If you want to play the files with windows media player try installing a codec pack. You can google for that, but I recommend using one of the mentioned players instead as it is cleaner and they are fast.
If your PC does play the video but its really choppy, you might not have a fast enough processor / or video card to keep up with the high bandwidth high def video.

its not normal, your harddrive is failing, is it accessible say if you playback whatever you've been recording?

You have to install the driver software so that the computer can recognize your camcorder.

As long as you haven't written over the files, there maybe a chance. attach the camera to the computer with a usb or whatever cable it has so the computer can read the drive.

Run this on the computer and direct it to the camera's hard drive. It will attempt to recover the files that were deleted. Now this takes a long time to pull deleted files from a drive, so set it somewhere and make sure the power stays with it. Good luck

All you have to do is to copy all the files from your camcorder and then save to your documents.
Download video converter to the website. Google it and type it there .TOD convert to MPEG4.

restart and tap f8 key repetdly till u get to the blue screen that has options...or use the recovery manager
u can fuind this doing a internal serch from run menu

its because its a TOD file and i movie dosent know what it is
i had the same problem and i had to use a program called sony vegas Pro 8 it recognised the video and audio thats the only way ive gotten to files to work

To transfer the video recorded in the Hard Drive camcorder to a Mac Computer, connect the Camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.

Make sure that the USB connect option is set to the USB connect with hard drive icon.
The computer recognizes the Camcorder and displays a "NO Name" folder on the Desktop.

Double click the "NO NAME" folder to navigate through all the files and folders.
Next, look into the listed folders for the recorded videos then perform copy and paste operation to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Or, you may also try using iMovie to transfer videos off the Camcorder provided you've installed the MPEG2 Playback component for iMovie on the Computer.

Can you see the player under “Disk Management”?
If not change the jumper setting on the hard drive to “Cable Select” and see whether it works.
