I am getting peculiar noises from my laptop
it sounds like a faulty lead i no that on a desktop one bad lead can cause a conputer to shut down
you might test all leads that are attched to your hard drive from your motherboard
is it getting hot try blowing your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line dust causes static to build up in a computer causing it to overheat any many other problems
hope this helps

What kind of enclosure and cable do I need to make my drive exter
This drive is an IDE/ATA hard drive.
To use this as an external hard drive, I suggest you purchase an USB hard drive adapter case (with an USB cable) and install the hard drive into this case.
When you plug this adapter into the USB port of a computer, the computer will see this as an external hard drive.

HOW DO I CONNECT THIS DRIVE TO MY DESKTOP PC ?
The adapter has both interfaces on it...that is, it will plug into an EIDE interface or the SATA interface. The other end is a USB connection for plugging in to the computer, this way the computer treats the drive as an external. They sell for around 20 bucks.

Laptop
Try removing the battery entirely, and see if it will power up with just the power cable. If so, it means that your battery is causing the problem. If not, it's possible the battery is good, but the power cable has gone bad. Usually there is a "brick" in the center of the cable, make sure it is fully plugged into and connected to the cable that leads to the wall socket. In many cases that brick has a green light on it - does your's have the light and if so, is it lit up when it's plugged in?

Transfer Rate is LOW!
If you?re getting odd noises coming from the hard drive you may be suffering from read errors. Windows has a utility called chkdsk that can test the hard drive readability and perform repairs in some cases.
-Click on Start, then Run.
-In the Open field enter ?chkdsk /f /r? and click the OK button.
-You will be prompted by and error that chkdsk cannot run but will ask if you want to schedule it to run the next time the system restarts. Enter ?Y? .
-Restart your computer,
-Chkdsk should run after your system reboots. It will check the integrity of your hard drive and ?repair? any spots on your hard drive it can?t read. Actually what it does is move the data in the spots it can?t read and then marks the spot so that Windows does not use them in the future. The process should take a couple of hours, depending on how much information is stored on it.
Let us know what you find and don?t forget to rate this posting.
