My hard disk capacity is 80GB. It is seagate

Indeed. The problem is that you put the jumper and it limited the capacity of the hard drive to 32 gb.

Here is a picture that will help you put the jumper in the exact place:

I have recently attached a seagate hard disk with

You have to initialize and format a drive before you can use it. A brand new unformatted OEM hard drive and installed it in my Windows Vista PC. The drive is connected to the motherboard via a SATA (serial ATA) cable, just like my original hard drive. This new drive was for data/backup. When I turned on the computer, the BIOS picked it right up. However, when I got into Vista, it did not detect any new hardware. I even went into the Control Panel and chose Add Hardware and let it scan for changes, but it didn’t find anything new. Windows Plug and Play If your drive isn't detected, there is no need to panic. Windows Vista is a little funny about this sort of thing, but it is quite easy to fix. The problem is that the drive is not initialized, so the standard plug-and-play procedure for adding a drive does not apply. First, you must initialize the drive, then it will allow you to format it. After the drive has been formatted, it will be ready to use.
The first thing you need to do is go into the Control Panel, then double click on Administrative Tools. After that, open up Computer Management, then go to Storage, then Disk Management. This is where you will see all of your drives listed. Be extremely careful in this section because you don’t want to screw up your main hard drive.
What you are looking for in the Disk Management area is your new hard drive. If you only have one hard drive, it should show up as Disk 0. Therefore, your new drive should most likely be Disk 1. Underneath the name Disk 1 it should say Unknown, the size of the disk, and Not Initialized. Right click in this area and you should get a pop-up window. Click Initialize Disk and it should only take a couple of seconds. Your hard drive is now ready to be formatted. Formatting Your Drive Once your new hard drive is initialized, you will still have to format the drive before you can use it. To format, right-click in the column to the right of the Disk 1 label and then click New Simple Volume in the menu that pops up. From here, you can allocate how much of the drive you want for a new volume, what drive letter you want to call it, give it a name, and finally format the hard disk.
Formatting the hard drive may take a while, depending on the size. My 500 gigabyte drive took nearly an hour to format, so don’t be alarmed if your's takes a while. Once the format completes, your new hard drive will now show up in My Computer and you can start putting files on it.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST380011A "a disk read error occured"

Might be a damaged sector. Otherwise i would think you (by accident) created a seperate partition on your C:\ (? main) HD. The cause of damage can be many things, certain types of certain brands or more sensitive in how fast these sectors get damaged. But you can at least try to repair them with the disk repair utility in Win XP, called ChkDsk ("check disk"). However, what may end up happening is that ChkDsk will mark the sector as bad (instead of attempting to recover any information) and your hard drive will no longer 'hover' over top of that area of the drive, making it impossible to recover any data on the sector. Maybe try to google for (free) BETTER third party software for this first. So what caused it is hard to discover after it happened, but you can try to repair it.

You can recover the data by connecting this drive to another system or if you have windows operating system just install it choose the repair option. But first you connect this drive to another system as secondary drive and take the backup.

I need to replace my hard drive, do i need to

No you can replace it with any drive you want the higher the RPM the better if it's a ribbon type drive then get a ribbon type drive for it back up the data on the drive to cd's or DVD's or you will lose all information on the drive. You will have to fdisk and format and reinstall the software afterwords. This is assuming it's going bad. You will have to make sure the jumper cables are set the same on the back it will be master or slave or cable select. hope this helps.

It depends on what's caused the corruption If you think it is a virus then this will help

and is the first I'd use.

The second costs a little money but is well worth it. It's up to you if you feel it's worth the expense

How to make sata hard disk a slave???

Look at the jumper settings. These jumpers are located near the data cable and the power port of the hard disk. Usually by default, this jumper is set to "Master". To make it a slave, just remove the black or blue jumper or please refer to the jumper guide table printed in you hard disk's label.

MY pc does not start anymore. I have a Seagate

<windows root>system32hal.dll. is missing or corrupt. â How to fix it?â The Hal.dll file is the first file that boot.ini tells the system to look for at boot. â Looking at it this way, this error message can be rather misleading. In fact the reason could be a number of things, such as: â The boot.ini file is actually corrupt or damaged, â or it is pointing the Startup to look in the wrong place. The Hal.dll file is located in the System32 directory of your %SystemRoot% which in a default XP setup is:â C:WindowsSystem32.â You can use the Dos boot disk (or NTFS Reader above) to quickly determine if the file is missing.â If it is, then you should extract it from your XP CDrom and place it in its proper location.Boot to your XP CDrom, and then choose 'r' to go to the Recovery Console.â With your XP Cdrom in the drive, issue this command:Expand D:i386hal.dl_ C:Windowssystem32â â (This assumes the CDrom is D and your System Partition is C) â If this does not cure your issue this may be due to issues in your boot.ini file.â â The boot.ini file is actually corrupt or damaged, or it is pointing the Startup to look in the wrong place. Resolution:â The easiest way to fix this is to boot to the Recovery Console and replace the old boot.ini with a new one.â Once you have booted to the Recovery Console run these commands at the prompt:Attrib -H -R -S C:boot.iniâ â â (This removes the attributes and allows deletion). DEL C:boot.iniâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â (Deletes the corrupted boot.ini file)â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â BootCfg /Rebuildâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â (Recreates the new boot.ini file)If you would like to view the boot.ini file, you will need a boot disk to get to the DOS prompt.â If you have formatted with FAT32, then you may use a Windows boot disk (such as a W98 disk), but if you are running NTFS, you will need a NTFS reader boot disk, such as NTFS Reader For DOS which is available for download here.â To diagnose the problem, copy the boot.ini file from the hard drive (C:boot.ini) and open it with Notepad.â You will want to verify that the "Default=" line as well as the ARC path line are pointing to the right location.â Here is two examples of boot.ini files (ARC paths start with multi): [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect This is a sample of the above Boot.ini file after adding another partition running Windows 2000 Professional. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect â â
