My best guess is that either the digitiser has failed or the scan head is not moving. Both would cause the output to be white. Unfortunately in both these cases the unit is usually beyond economic repair.

Think about it, if the farmer is up a watch tower he can see further. That's definitely an advantage. But if he is up the watch tower and something happens to his sheep he will have to run all the way down to the bottom before he can deal with the situation. that has to be a disadvantage.
