Garmin gpsmap 295 will not run from internal battery power

I had the same problem. Reluctantly, I removed the batteries and the 8 phillips screws from the the case back perimeter. Be careful on opening. The unit is designed to open from the top and hinge at he bottom to keep the ribbon cables from being stressed. The unit should open nicely and lie flat on the table with the two bottom halves butted against each other. Get a magnifier and ensure the printed circuit board attached to the bottom half has all 3 screws. (I found one missing that has 2 functions - securing the board and delivering battery power. Mine had wedged against a piece of clear plastic...it was hard to find!!!) I carefully removed the wedged screw and returned to the circuit board left most attach point. Close up the unit and we were back in GPS heaven. Battery power restored!!!! and my $250.00 still in my pocket. Yipppeee.

Where do i go to

Joe,

The Garmin "GPSMap 295" is at, as far as Garmin is concerned anyway, "end of life". This means Garmin will no longer support, repair, etc. this product. C'est la vie.

Garmin's older product lines lack the hardware to decompress the new "NT" (New Technology) maps that Navtek (the map company) is producing now. The NT maps are compressed so that they would fit on smaller capacity memory cards. By doing this, the maps required Garmin to include hardware (special designed circuitry) that could quickly decompress these maps "on the fly" for display. The much of Garmin's older GPSMap & StreetPilot lines predate this hardware requirement.

Our "still-functioning" GPSMap & StreetPilot GPSr will still pinpoint our location on the Earth as always - but lack the latest & greatest maps. You should review the maps that your GPSr can use and choose the one you prefer. I switched mine to display topographical maps. These show many of the road names like the City Navigator maps do, but lack important things like the POIs and routing. If you can do without them, this could be good enough. If you can't, you'll need to decide on whether the last non-NT map version is sufficient or purchase a new GPS that can accept the maps you want to put into it.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Second, Garmin no longer repairs the GPSMAP 295 units because they no longer have the parts to repair them in stock. (See screen-shot below, where I checked for you.)

This brings us to your options:

Replacement:
You may find that replacement is the more cost efficient option as opposed to having an independent facility repairing your unit.

Note: If you do elect to replace your unit with another one keep in mind that if you purchase from an online auction (eBay for example) your warranty - even if it's a new unit - is automatically VOID. (Regardless of what the seller claims or advertises.)

Repair:
Here's a link to an independent repair facility you can contact to see if repairing the unit is a viable option.
