Hi, You must undergone deep cleaning first in the maintenance tab.

Often means something is blocking the printhead from traveling all the way left & right. Look carefully in there, especially under the ends, for a scrap. It may be black with ink and hard to spot, but if you see it, a minute with some tweezers may fix everything.
Sometimes the timing strip gets knocked out of its sensor, so the machine can't detect whether it's moving when it turns on the motors, so it locks up with that error. Getting to that is a bit trickier. Open the top and pry out a couple of skinny plastic covers that hide cables. One of those covers acts to lock in the lever that holds the top section up; once you've removed the cover, you can unsnap the lever from the bottom end, allowing you to stand the top (scanner) section straight up. Take a good look at the cables & how they're laid. The flat white one is especially delicate, and must not be reinserted crooked. Unplug those cables and pull them out of the way so you can remove the top cover they're laid in. There's also a ground wire to unscrew.
The top is held on with what - six or seven screws? Keep track of which goes where. I think the front edge is caught by a plastic hook, also. Free it by prying with a small screwdriver, and lift off the top cover.
The whole printer mechanism is now exposed. You can see the 1/4-inch (6mm) wide strip of film that's stretched tight across the entire width of the printer area. The gray in that strip is hundreds of fine vertical lines. A sensor in the printer head carrier shines through those lines and counts them to keep track of where it is at all times. If you find the film strip laying flat across the top of the printhead, just lift it carefully and lower it into its slot in the sensor. It should be vertical and straight. Don't get ink or fingerprints on that strip; it can be cleaned - very gently - with a damp cloth.
Put the cover back on, install those cables, the lever that holds the scanner up, and the little covers, and try it out.
If it's not a paper scrap or that timing strip, it's probably too expensive to mess with, but check with the closest service center listed on Brother's website. If none appear to be close enough, don't be shy about calling one of the closest ones and asking if they have another branch that's not listed on Brother.

Unable to clean usually means the waste ink tank is full, you'll need it replaced by a shop so they can reset the counter as well.

From past experience and current research, you can not scan with an error on the LCD screen. Therefore you would have to replace the ink before the scanner will work.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Is this a top feed - that is paper loaded on top at the back bottom feed from a tray underneath? Top feed take one sheet of paper and gently push it down whilst the printer is trying to grab it. Tray feed - take tray out make sure no paper fragments are in the tracks and find a nail board and gently abrade the pick up rollers.

I had same problem on a MFC-3820CN Brother advised as follows:

"If the cover is opened during the power-down routine, when putting the machine into Power Save mode using the Power Save key, the LCD will display the message you mention in your email. The problem can be fixed by disconnecting the power cord and then holding down the on/off button while re-connecting the power cord again."

While waiting for brother to get back to me I accidentally put machine into maintainence mode and then when I re-powered up the problem was gone so I have not tried above myself, but can confirm problem is fixable.

Procedure how to reset the error 46 error (unable to clean). This can be done on every Brother inkjet machine with a numeric keypad.

- Machine off
- Switch on the machine while holding down the “menu” button until all the leds are flashing on/off. Now you are in “maintenance” mode.
- press 80
- press the “mono start” button several times until you see “purge: xxxx”
- press “2783” in order to reset the purge counter. You will see: “purge:0000”
- press “99” to exit the maintenance mode

Now you are able to print again, but actually your ink absorber box is now full with ink. Ink flooding can happen if you don’t replace this ink box

It needs a new print head. Brothers are notorious for this issue. Especially if you are using generic ink and not Brother branded.

It seems simple enough, but this is one of the most effective ways of fixing printer cartridge error. Mostly, printer cartridge error occurs when the printer head is unable to identify the cartridge properly. And the basic reason behind this is that the cartridge is improperly attached.

To reattach the cartridge check the following steps :

turn on the lid of the printer and then remove the cartridge from the printer head.

Check the cartridge to make sure that there are no scratches or other damaged parts that can contribute to a printer cartridge error report.

Take note that the cartridge should not be left open for more than 30 minutes; otherwise the ink will start to dry up and the cartridge will get clogged.
