I saw it for sale on three different web sites for under $20 or less. I didn't see it free except for a fraudulent web site that was apparently malicious according to my antivirus software I use.

This model does not have a slide or lever to lower the feed dogs. Instead, it has a little metal plate that you clip onto the rotary hook cover to cover the feed dogs. It should be in your accessory kit if it is complete, its about the size of a postage stamp, rectangular with little legs at each corner. Clip it into the four holes on the hook cover and away you go. If you are doing free motion embroidery you'll need the special foot too also shown in the image below.

Ar you using a blunt needle? Old thread? the correct size needle and thread for the material used? The same thread in the bobbin and the needle. Is your needle slightly bent? there are many reasons for this but more info is needed. :-)

Likely it needs a thorough comprehensive clean/lube. Over time the lubricating grease hardens preventing internal cams and levers from functioning properly. A machine sewing in reverse is a common issue when feed dog linkage is stuck from failed lubrication. You may be able to oil just the feed dog linkage. Possibly just below the needle plate, but more likely you will need remove the bottom cover plate.
