I feel you have lost the shear pin that goes on your axle. The shear pin goes in the little groove in the wheel It may have fallen out when you pulled the wheel off.There are also safety pins in the belt drive pulleys

Some Ariens mowers have electric clutches. You can check for it and wiring to it. Maybe a wire is disconnected, wore thru etc. It sounds like it's not engaging.

Hello, I have attached an image for the edger model 986103. Notice in the picture that number 4 is a handle. It is called an operator presence control (OPC) this handle must be help down to prevent the engine from shutting off. Do this and your problem should go away. Best, Joe
