This printer requires you turn it on first and then hit print on your
document. If you do not turn it on first, you get a printer offline

Generally, this is Hardware Failure Error on HP Printers. You may try few steps before considering it is Hardware Failure.
Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Remove the cartridges from the product.
Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges
' message to display on the control panel.
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product.

If you still get this error,
Remove the Cartridges and Printhead (
Printheads are that hold the cartridge and it has a latch on right side
to loose to remove the Printhead, if you dont find a latch, your
printer does not has Printhead. Generally, Printers with only 2
cartridges do not have Printheads and any printer beyond this with 4,5
or 6 cartridges have printheads. Sometimes the cartridges are on left
side or printer and Printheads inside the printer after you open front
access door or you will find cartridges and printhead both inside the
printer if you open the front access door ) Clean
the contacts ( Electrical or Golden contacts ) using lint free cloth. (
Cloth damped with few drops of water, squeezed properly ) Put the Printhead and Cartridges back and Turn off the printer and turn on.
If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, Service the product as it needs repair. If your printer is In-Warranty, Contact HP Tech support - 1800-474-6838 and they should be able to replace it without charges.

Wipe the electrical ( tiny golden contacts ) with Lint free cloth. Disconnect the power cord from back of printer and while holding the power and cancel button - connect the cord. Release the buttons after 2-3 seconds. It should prompt you to install cartridges. Hope everything goes smooth, if not it could be hardware related issue. With regards to your problem, please try the procedures below. 1. Reset the system numerous times. including disconnecting and reconnecting the power. 2. Followed the "Remove, clean, and reinstall the printhead" instructions - Did not work
Next step recommended: Replace the printhead If the steps above did not solve the problem, the printhead should be replaced.
To see which color is having an issue, go to printer control panel and select "settings" > Tools> Print report> Print Quality report. When the page prints out, you will see which color is the problem. After you have figured that out, make sure the problem is not with the cartridge.
If you see lines or missing colors, clean the printhead by removing it from printer(open cover, lift gray latch on the right side of the cartridges, remove cartridges and the printhead will easily slip out by pulling up)
then soak the printhead in half inch deep amount of window cleaning solution. Preferably warm. Let soak at least 3 hours. Dry out the printhead and wipe rear conacts from moisture and dirt. Reinstall into printer and see the results.

You should be able to go into your printer preferences or properties settings by going to the "Printers & Devices" tab. If this is for Widows 8 or 8.1 I have not upgraded to either OS and have no clue as to their layout for access. In XP and 7 there is the option of changing your default settings from color/auto to black & white only. Make sure you hit the "APPLY" button to set it "OK" button doesn't always keep the settings locked in.
