Does the bike have a sidestand switch that cuts the power if the stand is left down? If it does, disconnect it and temporarily join the ends together and try starting....

Here are the possibilities > > Bent clutch push rod, missing push rod ball bearing or push rod, worn out actuator shaft cam, Missing friction disk (5), or pressure plate (4), totally worn out friction disks, clutch plates not installed in the correct sequence, extremely weak clutch springs, stripped teeth on the clutch hub, wrong clutch cable length (inner cable vs outer cable), broken shaft, bent then broken shift fork stems, broken slider gear dogs and a missing shift fork pin.
You didn't say if anyone had worked on the clutch or gearbox so I am throwing in nearly EVERYTHING possible that could create the problem. A little more background and most of the above can be ruled out. Get back to us.

On the XJs, there is a plastic part that eventually breaks up, and pieces of it jam the shifter in first. YOu can fix this with a dnetail mirror, a flashlight and some probes or tweezers. Take off the clutch cover, and then peer and probe through the hole inside. Look for pieces of plastic (they'll be hard to spot), fish them out). Once you've got them all out, the bike should shift again. Experienced owners tll me the bike seems to continue to perform well without replacing the plastic bit.

sound like your starter gear might be missing a tooth or some other king of damage, this shouldnt be a costly repair, but I wouldnt ride too much as it is, if there is a chunk of the starter gear in the transmission, this could cause much damage and be very costly
