Had the same problem. If the starter turns the engine, check the spark plug for wear or excessive gap. Using the electrical system to start it may deprive it of just enough juice to overcome the gap or worn plug. Using the rope of course uses none.

Initially, externally charge the battery and have it load tested. This is to eliminate the chance of a weakening battery.
Offhand, check the starter relay. When the start button is pressed, the relay should click and provide contact to the starter motor. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.
