SOURCE: Gear Selecting
it might be your gears which are worn out and causing gear slips.. but there is high probability of your clutch plates getting spoilt.. the clutch plated work as disengaging the gears shaft to the main engine shaft.. sometimes when the clutch plates are very much use enough..,they stop working and cant retain to disengage the gears.. so first of all get your clutch checked well and then preoceed if it doesn't fix your problem.. heyii there is a shaft coming ut of the engine crank that connects to your transmission shaft which drives your gears and hence wheels.. so your 2nd gear must have worn out and for that reason the gear isn't working well.. get your gear box opened and check the gear.. This is the gear linkages. It is a cable operated system to allow the gear lever to be dash mounted.
They are a common fault. The parts are about £65 from Mercedes (dealer only part) and unless you know what you are doing you can expect about 2 - 3 hours labour charge, though there are no special tools involved.
They average about 60,000 miles, though the replacements tend to be better.

no power stuck in 3rd gear electric shop unless youve burnt it up good luck...www.TransmissionGarage.com
sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times
