Check the transmission oil level. That sometimes causes a whining sound.
Hope this helps.

Does yours have a turbo fitted as it can be this. if it dont go up or down with engine speed it can be somthing ells , like a wheel bearing catching brake shield ( onto the disc) or even the thrust bearing on the clutch. auto dont have this.

SOURCE: intermittent non-starting caused by high pitched whirring when key turned in ignition

hello gwolfson...from your explanation it sounds like the starter motor is turning but the bendix is not engaged. This happens over time and is caused by normal wear. A click or clicking noise would point to the starter solenoid. Don't wait until you hear a grinding noise to replace it, thats hard on the ring gear and flywheel. A NEW starter is recommended if you plan on keeping the car. If not, you can go with a rebuilt starter for around 65 dollars. Of course make sure the battery terminals are clean and secure as well as the solenoid terminals.
Good luck...i hope this helps and will fixya up.

SOURCE: whine from 2005 corolla automatic transmission

Have the tranny serviced with fluid change and filter, if noise it still there it is the torque converter . Have the dealer fix it ,and have it on paper with dealer invoice when it is done. Do all this before warranty expires. IT IS NOT USUAL for any car, Toyota included, to have tranny whine!!!!!

I assume that you have a 6cyl engine, noise came from both worned secondary timing chain tenssioner shoes, just replace those two and while you have them all apart, also replace main tenssioner and guide, then all noises will go away. Good luck!

The basics, your battery is used to provide power to the starter. Once the engine is running the alternator then provides current to recharge the battery and run all of your electrical components. so I would suspect the starter is not working to start the engine.

Continued battery drain and high pitched noise when car started

Maybe the alternator is bad. A high pitched whine could mean that the alternator is not working properly.

One can test, by removing the belt to the alternator and running the engine and seeing if the whine goes away.

High pitch whine

sounds like your one of your hubs on the front axle are staying engaged when you turn off the 4wd. By reselecting the 4wd high and back to 2wd hi it is causing it to release. Get it looked at these can get expensive if damage is done.

Camry 2.2 engine whine

Some alternators will complain during higher output to replace the charge you used in starting the car.
An old mechanics trick is to use a screw driver, held with the handle pressed firmly behind your ear (bone conduction) and then press the tip on various (NON-rotating!!) accessories to isolate the source of the noise.
An old mechanic friend could tell you exactly which bearing, crank or rod, was rattling and predict how long you had before failure.
