Oil leak from RH side cover

2005 V Star Custom 8500 miles

Oil leaking from the top seam on right side crank case cover.
The leak is NOT from the iol filter cover.

The allen head cap screws were tight, the cover has never been off and the bike was not dropped.

What would cause this?

How can I handle a clutch plate cover oil leak?

If you do not want to drain the oil, lay the bike (CARFULLY!) down on its left side.. let the oil settle down, Remove the right case, carefully clean ALL the gasket material off the engine case and the cover! make sure there are no dents, dings, scratches, etc on either surface!! Get some quality gasket sealer - NOT ANY FORM OF SILICONE SEALANT!!! I prefer yamabond #4. CARFULLY PUT A small BEAD around the face of the outer case cover face and place the NEW GENUINE OEM GASKET onto the case and make sure its seated fully around the case, you can use the screws to hold it in place until it dries. WAIT until overnight and it fully dried and seated/sealed. Now, carefully put a small amount of good heavy grease on the gasket then carefully install the case ..tightening in a criss-cross pattern until completely seated, then fully tighten all fasteners. If you do it right,, it will NOT leak!

I got my oil changed on my vstar 1100 about a week ago. Rode it locally but did not put on many miles. Over the weekend I went on a long ride with a few friends. At one point we were riding at between...

The o-ring on the filter housing could be the problem, or maybe it was not tightened properly. You will need to clean all the residual oil off, position you bike in the upright position and determine the leak source. Hopefully it's not a case cover. Good luck, i hope this helps.

1996 Sporty Sport Oil Leak

Without seeing the bike its really hard to tell but It could be leaking from a sensor (crank position?) and that would just require a new gasket or O-ring. If its your case halves leaking then you are talking a major tear down which could cost $800 to $1200 dollars not including whatever parts they find need replacing.

Leakin oil out of rear on my 07' v-star 1100 custom

Once your bike and the oil warms up crevasses can become more leak prone and oil becomes less dense making it easier for it to find its way through open spots. I would get the bike warm and then with the bike still running do a close up inspection to search for the trouble spot. Hopefully its just a top end gasket which has usually been the case with me.
