My 06 harley sportster shifts up and now is stuck in 5th gear because it won't shift back down, the shifter moves freely going down, but won't change gears

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

check oil!, use hd oil it is great oil for v twins

It could be your shifter pawl in the transmission. But, check for any binding in the long linkage between the shifter and transmission. Disconnect the long connector link at the shifter in the front and check for free movement of the connector and the shifter itself. If that moves freely, then I'd suspect the shifter pawl. You'll see the short lever that connects to the shifter pawl shaft. Make sure that it's tight and not loose on the shaft. If it's loose, the splines are probably worn in the lever and on the shaft as well. Move the lever like it would move to shift to a gear. You should feel spring tension against the movement and it should return to "center" when you let go. If not, the shifter pawl return spring is broken. Usually when this happens, all you have is first and second gear.

Rock the bike backwards and forwards while trying to shift the gears. If the lever moves up and down but the transmission does not shift, the shifter shaft in the transmission may be broken. When doing this test, make sure the final drive chain is on the bike.

There's only two things that could possibly make contact with the top cover and cause any problem. One is the shifter pawl and the other is neutral switch.

The shifter pawl return springs are notorious for breaking in the five speed transmissions. I've replaced a load of them. Take your foot shifter pedal and lift up on it until the transmisson just tries to shift. Then go back to the center position and press the lever down until the transmission just tries to shift. Does the spring pressure feel the about the same in both directions. If not, the shifter pawl return spring is broken.

With the top off, you can inspect the small spring on the sfifter pawl itself. See if that spring is broken. This is about the only thing that I know of in a five speed that will cause shifting problems. But then, I never claimed to know it all.

Sounds more like a shifter pawl problem. I'm not familiar with the RevTech tranny but it should be very similar to the original H-D tranny. The shifter pawl has to be adjusted so that it's got equal travel in both directions. If you're trying to adjust it. Put the tranny in neutral. Now lift the shifter lever until you feel the pawl engage the pin in the shifter drum. Then go back to the middle of the movement range and depress the shift lever until you feel the pawl contact the other pin. The lever should move about the same distance in each direction. If not, the shifter pawl needs to be adjusted. On some bikes, it take some special tools to be able to get to the adjuster. The adjuster is on the left side just in front of the lever that connects to the shifter pawl shaft sticking out of the transmission.

More than likely the shifter pawl has broken. Breaking in 5th gear is kind of unusual however, they usually break between first and second.

You'll have to remove the outer primary cover to look at the shifter pawl. It's partially covered by the clutch assembly.
