Transmission problems i recently. bought a 1990 honda civic hatch back.the first day i noticed it leaked transmission oil and this made the automatic transmission difficult to change from lower to higher acceleration.i took it to the garage and they checked and fixed the worn out screw that allowed the oil to leak and also added the oil until it was ok. the car behaved fine almost immediately but the next day it continued the difficult transmission despite the fact that the oil did not leak.Do i need to change a new gearbox or is there a solution.

I have a 1990 Civic EX, I had the same situation where the transmission would shift very hard, it got to a point where I would have to lift off accelerator to get trans to shift up. I took it back to honda and they said that was normal for civics. I went to the Auto Parts store and bought the Haynes Manual for this car and changed the transmission oil myself. The old oil was brown, I replaced with new oil (just over 2 quarts) and it ran great. I now change the tranny oil every year and after 18 years with this car have never had a transmission problem shifting. What I discovered is the transmission oil cooler located in the radiator is too small and the oil gets too hot and loses its ability to lubricate. By changing every year this is not a problem anymore. I try to change this at yearly intervals or 12000 miles, whichever comes first.

They should have suggested changing tranny screen and filter if tranny isnt maintained every 20,000to 30,000 you end up with gray like particles from normal wear wich get caught in the screen and valve body wich leads to erractic shifting valve body problems eventually tranny replacement number 1 rule oil changes on motor and screen and filter on tranny prevents premature wear longer life to two major key factors

Providing there are no oil leaks at all, some transmission stabilizer may help. Any experience i've had with a whining 5 speed, is not good. Usually it's a bearing on it's way out. Try some of this, and see if it makes any difference. RISLONE® TRANSMISSION STABILIZER

My 1990 Honda Civic will not shift above second gear.

is it a manual or automatic...if its a manual you probably forgot to hook up the shift linkage..if its a manual..you probably didnt put the shifter cable from the shifter on top right, so itll pull the gears when you if in and out on to or back and forth..look and see if the cable has too much slack..that hooks up to the transmission(automatic)....

Transmission problems

the best thing i can tell you and the cheapest is to try to change the screen and filter new fluid if this tranny was driven and never had a tranny change chances are from what your saying the damage is done the only chance you have is to try what i explained and hope the screen is just cached with debris and sludge good luck
