I have a 1990 Civic EX, I had the same situation where the transmission would shift very hard, it got to a point where I would have to lift off accelerator to get trans to shift up. I took it back to honda and they said that was normal for civics. I went to the Auto Parts store and bought the Haynes Manual for this car and changed the transmission oil myself. The old oil was brown, I replaced with new oil (just over 2 quarts) and it ran great. I now change the tranny oil every year and after 18 years with this car have never had a transmission problem shifting. What I discovered is the transmission oil cooler located in the radiator is too small and the oil gets too hot and loses its ability to lubricate. By changing every year this is not a problem anymore. I try to change this at yearly intervals or 12000 miles, whichever comes first.
hi, question, my civic dx automatic shifts hard, sort of drops hard into 1, both accelerating and decelerate. should i be worried about this? it is a 1990 so a very old car. would changing the oil, etc. fix this or is this tranny beyond being worth helping?
